Foresters, KaBOOM! and community come ... - Business Review USA

DUNCANVILLE, TX, Sept. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - It took 200 volunteers just over six hours to transform an empty patch of grass into a beautiful new playground at Waterview Park today. The colorful 3,000 square-foot play space - which includes features such as arch belt swings, a slither slide and five different climbing apparatus - will serve 7,500 children and their families in the community for years to come. Today's build was the final step in a two-month planning process that started at a Design Day in July when local children and community leaders met with organizers from KaBOOM! and ForestersTM to create their dream playground. The children's drawings were then used to create the final playground design.

"Foresters believes in providing opportunities for families to spend quality time together," said Kasia Czarski, Foresters Senior Vice President, Chief Membership and Marketing Officer. "A playground is an important piece for the revitalization of a community. Not only does it provide a first step towards keeping children healthy, but it's a safe, central location for the entire neighborhood to get together."

Volunteers from Foresters, the City of Duncanville, the Duncanville ISD Education Foundation and non-profit KaBOOM! gathered at the site at 8:30 a.m. After an inspirational kick-off ceremony, they formed teams and worked together to pour cement, move safety surfacing and assemble equipment with direction from KaBOOM!. By noon, the outline of a playground started to take shape and by 3 p.m., it was complete.

"The City is extremely grateful to have been selected as a partner in this project," said Duncanville City Manager Dan O'Leary. "This community-built playground means a great deal to our city as it served as an opportunity to bring the community together to install a much-needed safe play place for the children of Duncanville."

"The sole purpose of the Education Foundation is to support Duncanville ISD and its students. Waterview Park is a shining example of supporting a creative and innovative project that will directly benefit not only our students but the entire community," said Foundation Board President Earle Jones. "Waterview Park provides a wonderful place for families to gather and play, while affording Brandenburg Intermediate an enhanced outdoor learning space."

Since 2006, Foresters has invested over $7 million with KaBOOM! with almost 100 playgrounds built or planned across the US and Canada. Over their 15 year lifespan, these playgrounds will provide more than 2.6 million children and their families with an opportunity to spend quality time together. Foresters is a KaBOOM! National Partner and a founding member of the KaBOOM! Leadership Circle - a group of organizations providing long-term guidance and support to KaBOOM! and its mission.

About KaBOOM!
KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to saving play. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 90,000 places to play, built more than 2,100 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level. Hammond chronicles the founding of the organization and the importance of the cause of play in his The New York Times Best Seller KaBOOM!: A Movement to Save Play, now out in paperback. The book details how businesses and communities can work together to save play for children across the country. All author proceeds support KaBOOM!. Bo verdict allows China to focus on succession

BEIJING (AP) ? With disgraced politician Bo Xilai expelled from the party, his career effectively ended with a slew of criminal charges that are certain to result in convictions, China's ruling communists can finally focus on the crucial task of ensuring a smooth transition to a new generation of leaders.

On Friday, the party's decision-making Politburo finally took long-awaited action on the scandal that had loomed over Chinese politics for more than half a year, leveling criminal charges against Bo that range from corruption to sexual affairs to abetting the cover-up of a murder by his wife. At the same time, the 25-member Politburo also made the long overdue announcement of the opening of the party congress, now scheduled for Nov. 8, when President Hu Jintao will step down as party boss and Vice President Xi Jinping will succeed him.

The twin pronouncements are connected: Getting Bo out of the way was seen as crucial to healing rifts in the party and allowing Xi and a new leadership to come to power without the overhang of a messy scandal.

"Having settled this contentious issue, the party leadership is in a position to start the party congress with a facade of unity and also harmony," said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Friday's announcement also came on the eve of National Day, which commemorates Mao Zedong's Oct. 1, 1949, declaration of victory in the country's civil war and the dawn of the People's Republic of China. Despite China's explosive economic growth and breakneck modernization since then, the events surrounding Bo's fall from grace show Mao's party remains very much the opaque and powerful force in Chinese political life.

"Again, this is politics overriding legal and judicial principles," Lam said, noting that the decision came from the Politburo convening behind closed doors instead of judges in an open court.

"The elite politics are still done" in secrecy, Lam said.

One of China's most ambitious and best-known politicians, Bo was brought down after a trusted aide disclosed that Bo's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was dismissed as party chief of the vibrant inland megacity of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The charges against Bo, however, go much further, spanning more than a decade and including allegations that he took bribes, abused his power and had improper relationships with several women. Given the party's control of the courts, the indictment ensures the flamboyant 63-year-old's political career is finished.

The criminal proceedings against Bo are likely to start soon, with steps being taken to remove him from the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. Delegates to that body have immunity from arrest and prosecution.

As the son of a founding father of communist China, Bo grew up with a broad web of contacts within the party, government and military. Unlike most of the other members of the stiff and remote senior leadership, the telegenic Bo also was popular with the public, using a crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing to court publicity.

That also made him a polarizing figure among the party elite. In recent months, as speculation swirled about Bo's fate and the debate among top leaders dragged on, it is likely that his allies argued for the administrative equivalent of a slap on the wrist, while the top leadership represented by Hu, Vice President Xi and Premier Wen Jiabao saw Bo as a threat that needed to be eliminated.

The decision to level such a harsh punishment is a sign that the top leaders won out, once again, said Jeremy Paltiel, an expert on Chinese politics at Canada's Carleton University.

"My guess is that Hu and Wen wanted to crush Bo, not just smother him," Paltiel said. "They got their wish, even at the cost of a month's delay in the congress."

The state-run Global Times said in an editorial Saturday that it is in the people's fundamental interest for the party congress to convene smoothly and that the decisions about Bo provide certainty.

"It is conducive to the current situation and also to the accumulation of political certainty," the editorial read.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed over to prosecutors since Hu ousted Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu in 2006 for corruption. Bo's case, however, was more politically divisive and delicate than Chen's, or any other recent case in which senior officials have been charged with corruption.

Ultimately, the decision on Bo was part of the overall horse-trading relating to the succession, said Steve Tsang, director of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in Britain.

"It probably means that as a result they negotiated something else that is better for the leadership succession," Tsang said.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known, and eliminating a challenger who had threatened party unity. He may face some opposition from Bo's supporters among party hard-liners, but Friday's announcement shows his influence was waning fast.

Friday's closed-door Politburo meeting also likely finalized other arrangements for the congress, including the much contested lineup for the new leadership as well as for a commission that oversees the party's control of the military. Those decisions will be presented to the 204-member Central Committee ? a cross-section of the nation's political elite ? on Nov. 1 before being discussed a week later at the congress, which is a largely ceremonial event, approving decisions made earlier by the party's inner circle.

In trying to use the Bo case to rally the rank-and-file, the Politburo said Friday that bringing down such a high-level leader was proof of the party's determination to tackle the corruption that has damaged public confidence.

"Investigations must be thorough, firm and make no appeasement, no matter who is involved and how powerful they are, so no corrupt member will escape the punishment of party discipline and the nation's law," it said.

Graduate in Chinese and Economics Chooses Lithuania

Even though Domas Girtavi?ius, a young perspective specialist fluent in three languages and has the possibility to choose any country in which to live and work, he moved back to Lithuania after graduating in Economics and Chinese Language in USA as he decided to contribute to his homeland, Sigita Limontait? wrote in ?Tiesa?.

He has graduated from Middlebury College in Economics and Chinese Language. Moreover, as a part of his studies in Middlebury College, it was mandatory for him to choose one of the University?s branches or partners in a foreign country. As Domas explains, it was only natural for him to choose to spend a semester in China, as he was already studying the language.

When asked why the recent graduate decided not to pursue a career in USA or China, he explained that his decision was based on the philosophy of choosing a first job position where h could get the highest number of opportunities and a place to grow. As he noted, Lithuania is a great place to work and improve for those who graduated from really good universities. For instance, those working in a branch of any of the Big 4 financial enterprises in Lithuania are coping during their first year with some of the tasks that their colleagues in USA experience only in their second or third year.

Even though the Chinese language is known to be extremely complicated and difficult, Domas had studied it for four years, and as he noted, Middlebury College in USA is known for its extremely intense Chinese language programs. All of the students sign a contract that obliges them not to speak any other language except for the one they are studying during their summer vacations and their studies abroad. Because of this method students become highly fluent in a very short period of time.

D.Girtavi?ius has recently started to work in ?Invest Lithuania?, where most of his work time is devoted to attractinginvestments from China.

According to D.Girtavi?ius, Lithuania is attractive to foreign investors due to several reasons: 1 the logistically convenient geographical placement of Lithuania with easy links to Scandinavia, Western Europe or Russia?s markets, 2 efficiently expanded IT? infrastructure, and 3 most importantly, the staff. His company emphasizes that Lithuania boasts that it has a convenient infrastructure, a number of highly trained and talented as well as affordable specialists, most of whom are fluent in at least two languages and possess good knowledge of communication technologies. In the global market, Lithuania is seen as a country from which one would buy business? process services, due to the convenience for the foreign companies to reach a variety of global markets. Moreover, Lithuania is one of the leaders in the internet speed and mobile technologies usage. Great conditions for manufacturing projects are provided by the free economic zone as well as the industrial estates.

D. Girtavi?ius also admits that he sees Lithuania as a place with many opportunities for the young, innovative and educated in many different career paths. Many young specialists are getting chances here which to most would be unreachable in bigger markets.

Reflecting on his studies, Domas says that the best universities in USA are famous for their workload and the individual attention given to the students. To study one has to learn discipline and hard work. However, the whole environment and atmosphere is highly motivating; for example, when one can find at least half of his course mates in the library studying at 11 in the evening and when a professor stops by and gives suggestions for the article which one is currently working on.

When asked if he is planning on moving soon, the young graduate answers that the world is too unpredictable and that it is natural for professionals working in international markets or speaking several languages to travel a lot or be placed in a foreign country. However, for the time being,? he claims to be happy and wants to work here. He also admits that even though the circumstances might change at some point, he intends to keep ties to Lithuania in the future and spend at least some of his time in the homeland.

Are You Working on Your Real Estate Investing Business Efficiently?

Post image for WARNING ? Real Estate Investors: Do NOT Buy this Book!

In my previous article I talked about a book that I felt was well worth the investment of money (to buy) and time (to read). I must say, it was a great decision on my part to purchase that book. It was?definitely?the most efficient use of my money and time. Tired of me patting myself on the back? I?m tired of it too. Time for some humble pie?

It?s easy to talk about our great decisions, but I believe the most can be learned from bad decisions. This bad decision revolves around the book, Access 2007 ? The Missing Manual.

If you are a real estate investor, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

I mean no offense to the author, Matthew MacDonald by saying this. In all actuality, the portion I did read was well put together and helpful; however, the main problem is I should have NEVER been reading this book in the first place!

You?re Getting Into Real Estate Investing ? Right?

When I was first getting started, my goal was to become a successful real estate investor, NOT a successful database management professional. What in the world was I thinking by purchasing and then beginning to read this book? As obvious as it may seem, my thought process at the time was (and still is) a very very easy and?cleverly?hidden trap: if I learn how to do this, my business will be much more efficient and I will save money. - WRONG!!!

To rub some additional salt into my own wound (serve up some more humble pie for myself), I should add that I am a former engineer, so I am pretty well versed in Excel spreadsheets. I bring up this point to show that even though the obvious ?time efficient path? should have been clear to me, I still fell into the trap.

Time is Not Unlimited

Check out how thick the book is! Again, what was I thinking?!?! Not only is this book over 700 pages, it was pretty darn complicated given the fact I knew nothing about Access 2007. I still remember sitting at my computer, going page? by page? by page? and barely making any progress. After a while I though, ?this is terrible, what a waste of time!?, but then I would justify continuing with the simple thought of ?well, I spend company capital on the book, so I better get my monies worth?? ugggg! I hate when I trick myself with those irrational thoughts!

Finally, I convinced myself that this?endeavor?was a complete waste, especially given the fact that I knew my way around a spreadsheet. I threw the book up on my shelf and haven?t picked it up until today to take the pictures of it.

Lesson to Be Learned

I?m assuming if you are reading this, it is because you came to BiggerPockets looking to learn more about real estate investing, and not database management. With that being said, spend your time learning about things that pertain to your goals. Yes, I know that seems so obvious, but learn from my mistake, it can happen!

If you want to become a landlord, spend your time learning about how to screen?tenants, solid lease agreements, the laws in your state, etc. If your goal is to be a wholesaler, spend your time learning marketing methods and ways to track your marketing. If your goal is to be a flipper, spend your time finding those solid contractors and sub contractors.

Don?t go and waste your time with things that aren?t going to significantly benefit your goal. I use the word ?significantly? because there does need to be some distinction. By learning Access 2007,?could I have benefited from it? Absolutely. I could do it all myself and not have to worry about ever paying someone to create a certain type of database. However? is that benefit really ?that? good considering the amount of time I would have had to spend in order to accomplish it? No way!!! Not even close!!! If I ever need to create a complicated Access database, I will GLADLY pay an expert to do it. It would be well worth it.

Do You Have an Access 2007 In Your Life?

Stop and think about what you are currently spending your time on. No matter if you?re a rookie, somewhat experienced, or a hardcore veteran. Is there anything that you are spending your time doing that really won?t have ?that? much benefit to you once you accomplish it? Odds are, you do in one way or another. Heck, I probably have a couple right now that I?m not totally aware of (yet).

Remember, being an efficient/successful business person and investor is all about making sure your ?time spent? is proportional to your ?benefit gained?.

I would love to throw my book up on Amazon or eBay to sell it. Or better yet, use it as kindling for a bonfire, but I keep it around. I place it in a spot where I can always see it while sitting at my desk to remind me of this: use your time wisely!

Challenges And Benefits Of OEM Manufacturing | Computers and ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Patrica | Thursday, 27 September 2012 23:48 | Word Count: 434

Today?success for manufacturer?s mostly depend on the ability to quickly respond to the ever changing consumer demands keeping the expenses low and the efficiencies high. To be able to manage the ?demand driven supply chain? is a highly challenging task in today?s complex and outsourced environment. Therefore, both the contract manufacturers (CM) and the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) need to deftly orchestrate the practices of a group of organizations along with their internal operations for fulfilling customer needs.

Crucial OEM Manufacturing Challenges

If OEM manufacturing companies are asked to name their critical business and technical challenge, than most of them would reveal planning and monitoring inventory all through the supply chain. Today most brand owners have deciphered that they are not able to manage this better than the contract manufacturers. For this, they need to possess the decision-making capacity and visibility across the entire supply network.

Furthermore, managing the product quality too is one of the essential concerns. The brand owner?s name is attached to the product that is sold. Hence, the quality of the product is synonymous to the brand value. This in turn points out to yet another crucial concern, i.e. Securing the intellectual property. Most often than not, intellectual property for instance, a new kind of device, its inbuilt software or a certain technology converting materials is the most critical asset that OEM manufacturing companies have. Therefore, safeguarding intellectual property, managing suppliers along with CM is the way to retain value.

Advanced OEM Manufacturing Solutions

Today, numerous OEM solution providers acting as a turnkey supplier and specializing?storage servers have been providing effective logistics and distribution services globally. These companies can manage consumer systems inventory, international and domestic shipping, warehousing, system refurbishment and so on, Every shipment are generated from the company?s original headquarters regardless its being a ?built to order? or ? built to stock?. Furthermore, the systems can also be shipped to the end users directly or drop shipped in multiple or single units to multiple locations around the globe.

?

In order to minimize the expenses and risks, OEM manufacturing companies efficiently manage consumer?s inventory of products and the spare parts. The inventory levels are effectively tracked on a ?real-time? based, thereby doing away with the requirement of end-to-end monitoring, component buying activities by consumers along with mitigating obsolescence all through the system?s Lifecycle.

Minneapolis gunman's family feared mental illness

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Andrew Engeldinger's parents were worried about their son's growing paranoia. In 2010, they sought help, enrolling in a 12-week class for families of the mentally ill.

For the last 21 months, the family said they reached out in hopes he would seek treatment. It was to no avail, as Engeldinger spurned their attempts at contact.

On Thursday night, they learned he was the gunman in Minnesota's deadliest workplace shooting. Police say Engeldinger fatally shot five people and injured three at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis before turning the gun on himself.

"It's not unusual when you're isolating yourself, which we know that he did, that eventually the only people you have left is your family and your co-workers, and often your paranoia translates to them," Sue Abderholden, a mental health organization executive who is serving as spokeswoman for Engeldinger's family, said Saturday.

Police say the 36-year-old Engeldinger shot and killed Reuven Rahamim, the founder of Accent Signage Systems; employees Ronald Edberg, Rami Cooks and Jacob Beneke; and Keith Basinski, a UPS driver who made a delivery at the wrong time. Two other employees remained hospitalized, one in critical condition and the other in serious condition.

The officers who responded to what Police Chief Tim Dolan called a "hellish scene" eventually found Engeldinger's body in the basement. Officers who searched his south Minneapolis home later Thursday found another gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition.

Police and company representatives have not yet said why Engeldinger was fired from a job he had held since the late 1990s.

Jim Dow, a sales representative who frequently visited the business, said Saturday that he'd spoken to Accent employees and family members of victims. He said they told him that in recent months, Engeldinger had been running afoul of managers with confrontational behavior and unexplained absences from work.

"He was getting mouthy, belligerent," Dow said. Cooks, who's been described as Rahamim's right-hand man, "would take him aside and tell him that's not acceptable," Dow said. "He'd straighten up for a while and then this would crop up again."

Dolan said it was clear that Engeldinger targeted some victims while bypassing others. Many of those killed or injured were management.

Engeldinger wasn't always a problematic employee.

Barry Lawrence, an ex-employee, trained Engeldinger on a sign engraving machine and recalled that he was "sharp, intelligent." He said though Engeldinger mostly kept to himself, he'd occasionally join his co-workers for drinks after work.

But, upon hearing of the shooting, Lawrence said he had a gut reaction.

"To tell you the truth, my first thought was Andy," said Lawrence, who left Accent in 2003. "He was pleasant enough to work around, but he just seemed a little off all the time. You get a feeling about people, nothing you can put your finger on."

Abderholden, the executive director of Minnesota's chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said she didn't know when Engeldinger's family first became worried that he had a mental illness. Two years ago, Chuck and Carolyn Engeldinger ? who raised Andy and his two siblings in the Minneapolis suburb of Richfield ? enrolled in NAMI's free, 12-week "Family to Family" course.

The classes, offered nationwide and taught by people who have had loved ones suffer from mental illness, include scientific and medical information about causes and symptoms, as well as concrete steps for trying to deal with the sufferer. They also have guidance for family members to cope.

"Sometimes it doesn't work, but you still are at least armed with the information to help you know what to do," Abderholden said.

Andrew Engeldinger never sought treatment to his family's knowledge, Abderholden said, and was never diagnosed with a specific illness. It wasn't long after his parents took the class that he cut off contact with the family, although Abderholden said she didn't know if pressure to seek help led to the estrangement.

The Engeldingers declined an interview request.

As he withdrew, Engeldinger's main point of contact with the outside world appeared to be his job. Several people in the Minneapolis neighborhood where he bought a home in 2004 said they never exchanged more than pleasantries.

Brian Jorgensen, who lived next door, said they only occasionally acknowledged each other when both were cutting the grass or shoveling sidewalks. He said Engeldinger wore sunglasses all the time.

Engeldinger was "just a quiet person who kept to himself but did not engage with us. And we didn't engage with him either because it just felt like he didn't want that kind of contact."

Outside of Accent Signage on Saturday, some residents of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood laid flowers at a memorial. Another swept up leaves in front.

A father-son duo of UPS employees, Dan and Nathaniel Miller, walked around the building and prayed. Basinski's death "hit me really hard," Dan Miller told the Star Tribune.

Abderholden said the likelihood of violence by a mentally ill person is very low, and that Engeldinger's family wouldn't have had reason to suspect he was capable of such violent acts. She called the family "extremely close" and said they are distraught.

"They just have deep sorrow about what happened, and if there was any way they could bring those lives back they would," Abderholden said. "They don't want to detract from the focus on those lives."

Minneapolis office gunman was fired day of attack

(AP) ? A man fired from his job at a Minneapolis sign-making business pulled out a handgun and began shooting up its offices, fatally wounding the owner and four others before turning the gun on himself, police said Friday.

Andrew Engeldinger, 36, injured at least three others in the Thursday attack at Accent Signage Systems, which Police Chief Tim Dolan said lasted no more than 15 minutes. Dolan also said Engeldinger may have chosen to spare some former co-workers.

"It's clear he did walk by some people, very clear," Dolan said.

Engeldinger's family said in a statement issued through the National Alliance on Mental Illness later Friday that he had struggled with mental illness for years. They offered sympathy to the victims.

"This is not an excuse for his actions, but sadly, may be a partial explanation," the statement said.

No details were released about why Engeldinger was fired, but police said he had ongoing problems at work. Investigators who searched his home Thursday night found a second gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition in the house. In the shooting, Engeldinger used a 9mm Glock semi-automatic pistol he had owned for about a year, Dolan said.

"He's obviously been practicing in how to use that gun," Dolan said.

Among those killed was Accent Signage System owner Reuven Rahamim, 61, employee Jacob Beneke, 34; and Keith Basinski, 50, a UPS driver who had made deliveries and pickups at the business for years.

Relatives described Rahamim, who immigrated from Israel and spent three decades building his business after starting it in his basement, as a passionate cook and devoted to his family. Beneke was an avid sculpture artist and painter who worked as a digital imaging manager, and Basinski was a Wisconsin native dedicated to the Green Bay Packers who Dolan said "just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The other two men killed were identified as Rami Cooks, 62, of Minnetonka, and Ronald Edberg, 58, of Brooklyn Center. Two other people remained at the hospital, one in serious condition and one critical condition. Four of the five men killed suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Police received multiple 911 calls from inside the business during the attack, which Dolan described as "a hellish time." When officers arrived, they heard no shots but found some evidence people had tried to fight back, Dolan said. He declined to elaborate.

Police initially said Engeldinger was fired in the morning, then returned in the afternoon. But police revised their account later Friday, saying they were piecing together chaotic events from multiple witnesses and that no one saw the shooting from start to finish.

Capt. Amelia Huffman said it appears Engeldinger got a letter of reprimand in the mail, came into the office Thursday afternoon and was then terminated.

"This had been an ongoing employee situation, which culminated in termination in the afternoon," Huffman said. "From the best we can tell, the incident started right after Mr. Engeldinger had been fired."

She said there was a struggle in the office and shots were fired, and employees elsewhere in the building heard gunshots. "And Mr. Engeldinger left the back office area and fired additional shots throughout the building," she said.

There were more than 20 people in the building at the time.

Dolan described Accent Signage System, a business that includes both offices and manufacturing, as a large building with many rooms branching off to the sides. There was no security and it took tactical units a long time conduct a thorough search. They found two people hiding "a very long time" after the attack began, Dolan said.

Engeldinger's body was found in the basement, he said.

Sue Abderholden, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness' Minnesota chapter, said Engeldinger's family had sought help from the group two years ago, with his parents taking a 12-week course on recognizing and dealing with mental illness.

She said their concerns were "much more centered around paranoid thoughts. No violence or anything like that." The Engeldingers were not able to convince Andrew to seek treatment, she said.

Andrew Engeldinger's uncle, Joe Engeldinger of New Germany, Minn., called his nephew a "good kid" who seemed normal and well-adjusted until about two years ago when he broke off family contact.

"When I would see his family, I would ask them about Andy and nobody could ever tell me anything," Joe Engeldinger said.

Joe Engeldinger, a professional handyman, said his nephew lived with him for a time in the early 1990s shortly after graduating high school, and worked for him helping to renovate old houses.

"He was a good worker. I never didn't trust him with anything," Joe Engeldinger said.

Chuck and Carolyn Engeldinger raised Andrew and his two siblings in Richfield, a suburb directly south of Minneapolis, according to Joe Engeldinger. He said his nephew was excited early in the last decade when he bought his first house ? the modest bungalow in south Minneapolis that police raided late Thursday night, hours after the shooting.

Neighbor Thomas Pitheon said he sometimes exchanged greetings with the man he knew as Andrew but who rarely made much of an impression.

"We just said hi, how you doing, that sort of thing," Pitheon said Friday. "He seemed like an average guy."

Pitheon said he "put two and two together" Thursday night after hearing about the shooting on the radio, then arriving home after dark to find "about a dozen" SWAT teams swarming around Engeldinger's house.

Joe Engeldinger said Andrew's immediate family were having a "horrible time" since learning what happened. He said they were as befuddled as anyone about why he withdrew from loved ones.

The phone line apparently belonging to Engeldinger's parents was not working Friday. His siblings, who also appear to live in the Twin Cities, did not answer phone calls or respond to messages through social media.

"I can only assume there was some kind of mental break there," Joe Engeldinger said. "He wasn't a monster. He wasn't. He was a real good kid, a real good person. He had a real good heart. I don't know what made all this transpire. Hopefully the truth will come out, and won't get twisted into some demented thing."
