Top Chinese steelmaker halts plant as economy slows

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's biggest listed steelmaker Baosteel has suspended output at a 3 million metric tons-a-year plant, and 40 percent of the country's iron ore mines are standing idle as steel prices have crumpled on weak demand in the world's second-biggest economy.

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co is one of the first major Chinese mills to publicly announce it is suspending production, but with China's economy cooling and banks curbing loans to an industry that racked up $400 billion of debt during recent boom years, more stoppages are expected.

In an attempt to kickstart the economy, Beijing this month approved some $150 billion worth of infrastructure projects, but there are doubts that demand in the world's largest steel producer will pick up soon.

"The government's infrastructure investment may only improve sentiment ... I don't expect a big lift in steel demand," Zhang Dianbo, assistant president of Baosteel, told reporters at an industry conference in Dalian.

At the same event, Liu Xiaoliang, executive deputy secretary general of the Metallurgical Mines Association of China said some 40 percent of China's iron ore mines have suspended operations as a slump in prices means they are losing money. Liu predicted iron ore prices would stay between $90-$110 in the next two years.

As demand for steel has dropped, the price of iron ore - a key steelmaking ingredient - fell to 3-year lows below $87 a tonne earlier this month. Prices have since bounced back to above $100, but remain 30 percent off this year's peak. China's steel rebar futures have dropped by as much as 24 percent this year to lows of 3,206 yuan a tonne earlier this month, though the infrastructure stimulus has provided some bounce.

The world's largest iron ore producer, Brazil's Vale SA , on Thursday forecast prices of $100-$120 a tonne and said it was pushing ahead with its own mine expansion projects. [ID:nL4E8KR1BL] Fourth-ranked Australia's Fortescue Metals Group this month slammed the brakes on plans to treble its iron ore capacity, cutting $1.6 billion in planned capital spending this year, and axing hundreds of jobs. [ID:nL4E8K4012]

LOSS-MAKING PLANT

The Baosteel plant, in Shanghai's Luojing district, produces steel plate used in the construction industry and for making ships and oil rigs. The company, which bought the plant for 14 billion yuan ($2.22 billion) in 2008, said in a statement it had been losing money due to weak demand and high costs.

It halted its first furnace in July last year, according to a report in the weekly Investor China. The second furnace, which was losing 100 million yuan a month, was suspended earlier this month, the paper said, citing a worker at the plant.

"With demand from shipbuilders so weak, other producers such as Angang Steel are also facing pressure," said Helen Lau, senior metals analyst at UOB-Kay Hian. She said further suspensions would depend on whether steelmakers could compensate losses from other profitable units.

Lau said the Luojing plant was more costly to run because of its technology, with its furnaces using the Corex smelting process of gasifying non-coking coal to produce pig iron.

A Baosteel source, who has worked at the plant, told Reuters the facility would eventually be shut as part of broader plans to relocate operations away from Shanghai.

Chinese steelmakers, already battling over-capacity, have been struggling with razor-thin profits or losses since Beijing clamped down on the real estate sector, hitting steel demand.

Baosteel's first-half profit more than halved, excluding one-offs, and the company has forecast that steel prices will remain under pressure this year. Baosteel shares last traded up 0.4 percent on Thursday. The stock is down around 6 percent so far this year, in line with the broader Shanghai composite index .

China's crude steel production fell 2 percent in mid-September to around 1.86 million metric tons a day. [ID:nB9E8DT02M] The China Iron & Steel Association (CISA), which is lobbying for tax cuts for iron ore miners to help them through the trough, predicted the country's steel production capacity would rise more than 4 percent this year to 900 million metric tons.

China produces about 1 billion metric tons a year of iron ore and buys 60 percent of the steelmaking raw material traded globally.

($1 = 6.3020 Chinese yuan)

B2B Social Media Marketing & Community Building Insights from ...

Determining why your company should engage in a social media plan is one of the first and most important steps.? Working towards the ?what? without the ?why? can result in wasted time, money and set a B2B marketing program off track.

Next up in our B2B marketing innovation interview series is Mack Collier, a well known and respected social media strategist and trainer specializing in helping companies better connect with their customers via social media.?Mack is also the force behind #BlogChat, the largest organized chat on Twitter.

In this interview, Mack dives into four things brands can do to cultivate and connect with fans, as well as well as three basic questions every marketer should ask themselves before embarking on a social media marketing program. He also offers sage advice on B2B innovation and tools.

Please tell us about you and the kind of B2B marketing work you?re most excited about.? Solve any tough ones lately?

The thing that really excites me about blogging, social media, content marketing, etc. is that I think we are getting back to the idea of creating marketing communications that can also create value for our customers. ?I think we are getting away from the days when you ?win? the sale by simply banging customers over the head with your commercial 15 times, to creating content that also creates value, which helps build connections as well as your expertise.

What are the essential starting points small businesses should consider when employing social media marketing and blogging in the B2B space?

I think the most important starting point for a small business or ANY business using social media or starting a blog is to answer this question: ?We are using social media because we want to ________.?

Too many businesses start using social media without asking themselves WHY they want to start using social media. ?(Hint: ?Cause everyone else is? is NOT an acceptable answer) ?Once your business can fill in that blank, then you can craft a social media strategy that actually helps you reach that goal.

There?s a common association that it?s tough to come up with new B2B marketing ideas, but as you know, innovation exists within B2B as much or more as it does with consumer marketing ? just in different ways.? What?s your process for coming up with new and innovative ideas for your B2B marketing efforts?

It?s tough for most businesses to come up with ANY new marketing ideas. ?But I think that?s often the case because businesses view their new marketing effort as ?How is this going to help us stand out?? vs ?How is this going to help us create value for our customers?? ?I think the growing trend of embracing content marketing is really helping businesses to review the idea of creating value via marketing, which I think is awesome.

An essential part of building a business online is to attract and engage a community.? What are your most practical tips that companies and brands should consider for connecting with and cultivating fans?

There are four things that brands can do to cultivate and connect with their fans:

  1. Be a part of the audience they want to connect with. ?Look at the world through the eyes of your customers. ?How does Harley Davidson do market research? ?By jumping on their Harleys and going for a ride on the weekend with their customers. ?The brands that do the best job of connecting with their fans look at their world the eyes of their most passionate customers.
  2. Embrace your fans. ?The biggest mistake most brands make when it comes to their fans is that they leave them alone. ?Your fans are special people that WANT a deeper connection with your brand. ?Reward that desire and look for ways to build a deeper connection with them.
  3. Focus on the ?Bigger Idea? behind your brand. ?Don?t focus on your product or service, focus on what your customers do with your product. ?For example, in its content Patagonia focuses on issues that are relevant to its customers, such as sustainability, protecting the environment, and being active outdoors. ?This approach makes its products more relevant to its customers.
  4. Look for ways to shift control to your fans. ?If you want to make your marketing more relevant to your customers, make sure it is spoken in a voice that they can understand and relate to; Their own. ?I?m not talking about simply crowdsourcing your marketing, but understanding your customers, and giving them input into the direction of your brand. ?Remember that your fans WANT to be heard by your brand. ?They want to know you are listening, and if you show them you are, that only validates their love of your brand.

Developing a solid B2B marketing plan takes research, and understanding of the customer goals, pain points and journey.? What are some of the most common myths or mistakes you?ve seen with B2B marketing planning?? Any tips on how to be more successful??

One of the great things about the rise of social media and digital communications tools is that it makes it far easier for engaged businesses to better learn about and understand its customers. ?There?s an exponential increase in content being created by?well everyone, and that content can be distilled down into valuable customer insights for the businesses that are willing to put in the legwork.

I think one of the biggest mistakes B2B companies can make is to form a picture of who their customers are based on outdated or incomplete information. ?Leverage these new social tools as a way to better understand and segment your customers to improve your marketing efforts and make them more effective and efficient.

With all the hype in the business marketing media, it?s tempting for companies to chase trending B2B marketing tactics like visual marketing or social networking.? How do you decide what the right B2B marketing tactical mix is for companies that you work with?

I think all companies really need to focus on their available resources and do NOT fall for the ?shiny object syndrome? and start using whatever the ?hot? social media tool or site of the month is. ?I think it goes back to asking and answering three basic questions:

  1. Who are we trying to reach?
  2. What are we trying to accomplish?
  3. What are our resources?

Let your goals define the tools you will use, not the other way around.

Companies that are in search of business growth with limited resources can often close part of the gap with tools.? What tools do you recommend for B2B marketers (or marketers in general) to get more out of their online content and social media investments?

Well I hate to give advice on which tool is best because I think that your goals/resources/audience defines the tools for you. ?But, when it comes to social media, I think right now there are two main tools to look at for B2Bs:

  1. Blogs. ?I will always love blogs because with a blog you control the content platform. ?That?s huge, and it allows you to create content that search engines love.
  2. LinkedIn. ?It?s simply more business-oriented, and there?s a higher probability that you can find key decision-makers and cultivate a relationship with them.

Now in general, it?s impossible to ignore Facebook simply because it?s userbase is so massive. ?If you are a business operating in the tech sector, it might be worthwhile to investigate Google Plus as well.

Please share your advice for other B2B marketers out there on how they can be more innovative.

In general, I think we all tend to overthink marketing. ?I think it all goes back to understanding who we are trying to connect with and how we can create communications that are valuable for them. ?For B2C brands, that might be less about the product and more about how customers will use the product and what they will do with it. ?For B2Bs, the idea is the same, its more about how another business will use your product or service to more effectively and efficiently run its business. ?I think a good starting point is to ask yourself ?What business problem does our product or service help solve?? ?Create marketing that focuses on the direct benefit for businesses.

Thank you for your insights Mack!

If you?re looking for even more insight on making your business more innovative, be sure to attend a recap of the first day of the conference on #BlogChat on October 4th.? Georgia's richest man runs for country's top job

UREKI, Georgia (AP) ? Georgia's richest man, billionaire and philanthropist Bidzina Ivanishvili seems to have it all ? a head-spinning fortune, the respect of his country and gleaming, art-filled palaces across the globe, including one where zebras and pink flamingoes roam.

What else could he want?

Political power, it turns out, and that has put him on a collision course with President Mikhail Saakashvili ? his onetime close friend and ally.

Since announcing his ambitions a year ago, Ivanishvili has been stripped of his Georgian citizenship and hit with fines of tens of millions of dollars. But he is undeterred in leading his Georgian Dream party into parliamentary elections next week that he hopes will make him prime minister, set to become the country's most powerful job after legislative changes next year.

The outcome of will have profound consequences for this small but strategically located South Caucasus nation, which has been the West's most loyal ally in a troubled, energy-rich region.

The 56-year-old Ivanishvili, worth an estimated $6.4 billion, was an early supporter of Saakashvili after he came to power following the 2003 Rose Revolution demonstrations that drove out the corruption-riddled regime of Eduard Shevardnadze. But Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia, gradually became disenchanted and began to fear that his disagreements with Saakashvili could imperil his future.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he suggested that his entry into politics was at least partly to shield him from government pressure.

"When you enter politics, it gives you some kind of protection," he said in his residence outside the Black Sea resort of Batumi. But he insists that his rags-to-riches story also points to a deeper drive to help his country: "A smart, gifted person can do things for himself, but also for his friends, for his village, for his country."

Ivanishvili was the youngest of five children in a hilltop village so poor and remote that a rickety old truck brought supplies just once a month. He often had no shoes and dreamt of owning a bicycle. After earning an engineering degree in the capital Tbilisi, he moved to Moscow, where he received a Ph.D. in labor economy.

When Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev launched his perestroika campaign and gradually allowed private entrepreneurship, Ivanishvili and a friend seized the spirit of the times. They began importing personal computers ? rarities in the Soviet Union that cost the equivalent of two or three cars. Sometimes he would approach foreigners at cafes and plead with them to bring computers on their next visit.

In 1990, a year before the Soviet Union collapsed, Ivanishvili and his partners amassed enough money to start a bank, Rossiyskiy Kredit, which became a leading financial institution. Its first office was at a kindergarten, and foreign partners coming for meetings stumbled over miniature toddler toilets. As his bank expanded, Ivanishvili started buying into mining and metals plants across Russia, and then reselling the shares at huge profit.

Skeptics wonder whether it was possible to amass such a fortune honestly, but Ivanishvili insists that he always ran a clean business.

"I never violated any laws," he said, "I never betrayed or deceived anyone."

For years, Ivanishvili was a quiet benefactor of thousands of his impoverished countrymen and also of Saakashvili's government, building schools and hospitals, buying new boots and blankets for the military and, he says, even paying for Saakashvili's inauguration. He also collected art and exotic animals and erected futuristic residences across the country, like a glass-and-steel fortress nestled on a hilltop in the capital Tbilisi.

But Ivanishvili says he broke off ties with Saakashvili after the leader cracked down on opposition protests in 2007, tightened control over media, and Georgia found itself in a brief but disastrous war with Russia in 2008. Saakashvili's government was further tainted in recent days when TV channels funded by Ivanishvili released videos of inmates at a Tbilisi prison being beaten and raped with objects, which sparked angry street protests.

"He has a built a tough, authoritarian government while at the same time trying to prove to Europe and America that he is building democracy," Ivanishvili said. "The people have been deceived, including me."

The two men's feud seems highly personal.

Saakashvili denounces Ivanishvili as a Russian stooge, referring to his Georgian Dream coalition as "forces of darkness." The president's camp also accuses Ivanishvili of corrupting Georgian politics and voters with his wealth ? which is equivalent to roughly half of Georgia's GDP.

Ivanishvili, in turn, portrays Saakashvili as a dim-witted former protege who used to call him a "hundred" times a day to ask for advice on running the country.

An August opinion survey by U.S.-based National Democratic Institute suggested that Saakashvili's United National Movement leads the polls with 37 percent support, while Georgian Dream has 12 percent. But Ivanishvili claims he has momentum on his side, with support surging since the release of the prison rape video.

So far Ivanishvili's political career brought him nothing but trouble.

He was stripped of Georgian citizenship a year ago, shortly after he announced his entry into politics. The official reason was that he also had a French passport ? and Georgia prohibits dual nationality. Even though parliament then adopted a law allowing Ivanishvili to run for office as an EU citizen, Ivanishvili said the loss of Georgian citizenship was deeply upsetting, especially considering the $1.5 billion he says he has spent on charity here.

The government then followed by fining him tens of millions of dollars over campaign funding violations, saying that distributing satellite TV dishes and offering a fleet of cars to his party amounts to vote-buying according to recently passed electoral laws that ban corporate donations to parties.

Some observers said the changes were necessary. Others, including Maina Kiai, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, said the legislation was aimed at preventing "certain individuals" from running in the upcoming vote ? an apparent reference to Ivanishvili.

Ivanishvili bristles at Saakashvili's accusations that if elected he would serve Russia, not Georgia ? calling such suspicions "laughable." Ivanishvili renounced his long-held Russian citizenship before launching his political career and has sold off his Russian assets to sever his financial ties with Moscow. Most of his assets are now in Western banks and about $1 billion in art.

Some experts agree that he's his own man, pointing to the fact that he had funded Saakashvili, the Kremlin's arch-foe, for years.

"All the evidence suggests that he is no one's project but his own," said Thomas de Waal, a Caucasus expert with the Carnegie Endowment. At the same, time the Kremlin is likely to court Ivanishvili, eager to have someone unseat Saakashvili.

Ivanishvili promises aggressive and quick reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and prompt foreign and local businessmen to invest in the economy. He intends to pursue a pro-Western policy and one day bring Georgia into NATO, while at the same time unfreezing economic ties with Russia ? something he himself acknowledges would be a very complicated task. "You just need to wait for the right time and without doubt improve relations with Russia," Ivanishvili said.

Ivanishvili vows that he will not be corrupted by power, noting that as a businessman he only promoted those who were not afraid to argue with him. But when describing how he would reform Georgia, he revealed some monarchic overtones.

"In such small countries," Ivanishvili said, "everything depends on one person, everyone else follows immediately."

MYTH BUSTING - Round Two - Wellness Blog - Training for private ...

By Allyn Amelia Blind, M.S., NASM-CPT, FNS

Kudos to the health, wellness and fitness industry for providing us all with a never ending supply of thoughtful and informational material to help us become our healthiest. Thigh blasters, ab gadgets, super special potions, pills and 'articles' are at our fingertips to climb the ladder of fitness success! Right? Well, not so fast. This inundation of information, marketing and selling has watered down the fundamental steps to true health and wellness. So we find ourselves here again - MYTH BUSTING - Round Two. Round one got us started with some of the most oft heard fitness and nutrition myths; check it out here.

Let's break it down; Round Two brings us a new opportunity to learn the rights and wrongs of the fitness and nutrition world.

Fitness:?

1. Being skinny means being fit.

We all have friends that can seemingly eat anything, never exercise and remain small. Many people ENVY?those friends. Well, not so fast. Just because someone is small and/or skinny doesn't make them FIT. Maybe this is YOU. Many refer to this as being 'skinny fat'. Essentially someone can be skinny but hold dangerous levels of body fat. The best way to find out if you might be in this category is through a body fat test. Women should find themselves between 14% and 24%, with men between 5% and 17%. An ABC News report conducted a study on 'skinny fat' individuals and found that??Out of the 800 slim people that received an MRI to scan for visceral fat, 45 percent had excessive levels of internal fat with some as high as 60 percent, yet exteriorly they appeared slight.??Even if someone doesn't gain weight easily, good nutrition and fitness are essential to building a healthy body.?

2. High reps will 'tone' me and low reps will get me HUGE.

Any type of resistance training provides a stimulus to the muscle. Whether you're trying to gain mass or look 'lean and toned', a mix of low reps and high reps are important to include in your lifting program.?You should approach every resistance session with the objective to challenge that muscle group through varying weight and rep ranges. Becoming 'huge' or 'toning' up are more specifically dictated by your consistent training AND nutrition program. If you want to look tone, you'll be dropping fat (hence, showing your lean muscle). If you are trying to 'get huge', a caloric surplus will be necessary.?

3. Stretching before working out will help decrease the chance of injury.

Wait, what? I don't need to stretch? Not quite, flexibility is an important component of every fitness?program. However, it can be detrimental to perform static stretches before your workout. There is research that shows runners who static stretch before running actually have a higher rate of injury. A warm up with joint mobility and activating muscles will best prepare your body for your workout. You want to increase your range of motion effectively, before you stimulate your muscles. Save that stretching for AFTER your workout and get in a full cool down.?

Nutrition:

1. Carb loading will BEST prepare me for my workout.

While it is important to consume food before a workout (1-2 hours before), it is not necessary to 'load' up on carbs. With the exception of endurance athletes or long distance runners, your body does not need to store such vast amounts of carbs to help you perform at a high level throughout your workout. Go for a balanced meal that contains lean protein, healthy fats and whole grains. As always, keep portion sizes moderate.?

2. Fresh fruits and vegetables are better than frozen.

Not so fast! Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked and frozen at the peak of freshness. When you go to your freezer to pull out those frozen strawberries, they'll be found in that perfect state. Fresh fruits and vegetables are often TWO weeks old by the time they make it from the field to your shopping cart. Look for fresh options at local farmer's markets (shortest farm to table option), but also feel good about using those frozen fruits and veggies. Another benefit of going frozen is shelf life; it's painful to watch fresh produce go bad as you 'forget' to eat them.?

3. Sugar causes diabetes.

The main risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are consuming a diet high in calories, being inactive and being overweight. If you do not have diabetes, are in a healthy weight range and are active; sugar will not cause you to get diabetes. If you DO have diabetes, a diet high in carbohydrates and more specifically, sugar, is certainly not advised.?

Why You Need To Start Saving And Investing ... - Free Finance Articles

Forex Trading

Many people only get started with saving money when they?re older. However, considering the uncertainty of our economy, it is wise to think about building your wealth when you?re younger. There are a number of ways to create your financial portfolio, and contrary to public opinion, such activity is not exclusive to well-off individuals.

Save money in a savings account. This is the simplest and most convenient means of building your wealth. If you receive a fixed income, make sure to pay yourself first, meaning, you have to set aside at least ten percent of your income as savings first and use the rest to cover your purchases and financial commitments, not the reverse. Also, it would be wise to also set aside an emergency fund, which many recommend should be between 3 to 6 months? worth of what you spend monthly. Locate a bank where your money can make reasonable interest so that your money continues to grow.

Invest in bullion coins. They are available, wonderful, and tangible. The value of both silver and gold coins has been improving at impressive rates, making them all the more desirable. Silver coins are a more sensible choice for new investors because these are less expensive than gold coins.

Buy bonds. Businesses and governments issue bonds to fund operations or certain projects. By investing in a bond, you are basically allowing them to borrow money for a certain period of time at the end of which you will get the loan amount as well as interest payments. Bonds can be bought from the treasury or from your bank.

Consider Forex trading or investing. Although this market is extremely volatile, you can earn money even in a bearish market. Additionally, this financial market operates for the entire day, five days each week which suggests, you can participate in the Forex market even if you have a full-time job. Go here for handy Forex tips.

Put money into mutual funds. Mutual funds are an investment scheme where money is pooled from many investors. It is then utilized to buy stocks, bonds, other securities or assets, or a mixture of these. The main benefit of mutual funds is that it can accommodate individuals who don?t have a lot of money to purchase other investment vehicles. Also, knowledgeable and expert managers will be performing all the research, security selection, and overseeing your investment.

Open a sideline business. With the increasing importance of the Web, having business on the side has never been easier. Also, creating a web based shop is less expensive than starting a physical store. For more information on Forex exchange trading and how to improvise your wealth, follow the link.

Same As It Ever Was? A Review of David Byrne, How Music Works ...

Posted by: Keith Meatto on: September 24, 2012

David Byrne, How Music Works

David Byrne?s new manifesto slash memoir, How Music Works, has been written many times before. Ethnomusicologists and philosophers, from Theodor Adorno to Walter Benjamin to David Suisman, have chronicled the historical shift from classical to popular music, lamenting it, praising it, and/or evaluating the societal changes brought about by it and its corresponding technology. Byrne?s book, which illustrates the history of analog and digital recording, narrates the advent of the music industry, and claims to describe how to create a music scene or subculture offers almost nothing new. One could learn a similar amount about modern musical historical shifts through a single listen of LCD Soundsystem?s ?Losing My Edge.? So what gives David Byrne the right to write?

For starters, there?s his legacy as the leader of Talking Heads, a band that actively spearheaded new musical trends, fusing genres and synthesizing the past and the present. While Byrne, who turned 60 this spring, is now decades removed from his Heads days, How Music Works taps into how older musical figures can remain culturally relevant instead of retreating to writing the ?aging rocker biography.? Through attending and analyzing Tune-Yards shows, collaborating with Dirty Projectors on Dark Was The Night, a charity compilation showcasing the who?s who of indie rock circa 2009, and, most recently, releasing the collaborative album Love This Giant with singer/songwriter Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent, Byrne has stayed in the public eye.

Yet, although Byrne stays visible through collaborations, whether the music produced through these collaborations offers anything new is a different story. Byrne, in reference to the popularization of sampling in Remain in Light and Bush of Ghosts, spends a lot of time in How Music Works writing about contemporary sampling and the phenomenon of song lyrics as cultural reference points creeping into everyday dialogue (i.e. Beyonce?s ?put a ring on it?). He connects this trend to live acts that are more visual icons than live performers, like Lady Gaga. Yet, is Byrne a victim of his own accusation? In the book, he chides Pitchfork for saying that he would collaborate with anyone for a bag of Doritos, claiming to be extremely picky about with whom he works. Byrne?s claim is believable, but the extent to which he is the same musical game changer he was years ago is questionable at best. In other words, Byrne seems to be simply exhibiting the visual image of ?hip? or ?indie.?

How Music Works functions best as a ?Where do we go from here?? piece. In the final chapter of the book, Byrne asserts that future generations will look at today?s governments slashing arts budgets in bewilderment. The current movement to bridge the gap between arts and sciences is based on studies that suggest that arts education fosters creativity and improves observational skills across all fields. Byrne implicitly suggests that innovative popular music could improve the world in the same way Adorno described how challenging classical music fostered self-improvement. Perhaps now more than ever the music world needs Byrne to return to innovation. Society could look to a technologically and musically ahead-of-the-game figure like Byrne for guidance, so future generations do not look back on today and say ?same as it ever was.?
