Gadget makers jockey for edge in holiday lineups

NEW YORK (AP) ? Think of it as the opening act at a concert: Nokia, Motorola and Amazon are expected to unveil new mobile devices this week before attention turns to a new iPhone and possibly a smaller iPad from Apple.

Makers of consumer electronics are refreshing their products for the holiday shopping season. Apple's rivals are hoping that a head start on the buzz will translate into stronger sales. Nokia and Microsoft, in particular, are trying to generate interest in a new Windows operating system out next month.

Apple dominates the market for tablet computers. Seven out of every 10 tablets shipped in the second quarter were iPads, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. Rivals have been trying to compete with smaller, cheaper models ? such as the Kindle Fire, which Amazon is expected to update on Thursday. Now, there's speculation that Apple will be coming out with a smaller iPad as well.

Sales of Apple's iPhones are still strong, though the company lost the lead in smartphones to Samsung this year. Samsung Electronics Co. benefited from having its Galaxy S III out in the U.S. in June, while Apple was still selling an iPhone model released last October. A new iPhone is expected as early as this month, allowing Apple to recapture the attention and the revenue.

Here's a look at what to expect this fall:

? NEW IPHONE: Apple Inc. has been coming out with a new iPhone each year, and that's likely to continue. The new model is expected to work with fourth-generation, or 4G, cellular networks that phone companies have been building. That capability is something the S III and many other iPhone rivals already have. A bigger iPhone screen is also possible. Apple said Tuesday that it will host an event in San Francisco next Wednesday. The topic wasn't disclosed, but the email invitation contains a shadow in the shape of a "5'' ? a sign that the iPhone 5 is coming. Sales usually begin a week or two after such an announcement. One thing is known: Apple plans to update its phone software this fall and will ditch Google's mapping service for its own.

? SMALLER IPAD: Apple has done well selling its full-sized tablet computer, which has a screen that measures nearly 10 inches diagonally. Many companies have tried to come out with iPad alternatives, but the ones that have had moderate success have tended to be those with smaller, 7-inch screens and lower price tags. There's a belief that Apple will come out with mini iPad this fall ? possibly with a 7.85-inch screen ? to compete with those competitors. It's not as much a certainty as a new iPhone, though. Apple hasn't said anything about its plans.

? REKINDLING THE FIRE: Amazon.com Inc.'s 7-inch Kindle Fire is one of the smaller tablets with decent sales. Last week, Amazon said it has sold out of the Kindle Fire, a sign that it had retooled its production lines for a successor. Amazon has a major event planned in Santa Monica, Calif., on Thursday. Amazon hasn't said anything about what it will say, but it's expected to announce a new Kindle Fire and possibly other Kindle e-readers, too. Barnes and Noble Inc., which makes the 7-inch Nook Tablet, may have an update this fall as well.

? MOTOROLA'S RETURN: Though it's a pioneer in the cellphone industry, Motorola hasn't had a hit since the Razr phone came out in 2004. Under new owner Google Inc., Motorola Mobility is trying to change that. It has scheduled an event in New York on Wednesday. No further details were available. It could be a new phone or a new tablet running Google's Android operating system. Either way, it will be the first Motorola product announcement since Google bought the company for $12.4 billion in May. Google, meanwhile, continues to sell a 7-inch Android tablet, the Nexus 7, made in partnership with AsusTek Computer Inc.

? CALLING ON WINDOWS: Microsoft Corp. will release a new version of the Windows operating system on Oct. 26, one that's designed to work on both traditional computers and tablet devices. A new version of the Windows Phone system is coming out, too. Once-dominant phone maker Nokia Corp. has been struggling in the shadow of Apple, and it's counting on the new Windows system for a revival. Nokia and Microsoft have jointly scheduled an announcement in New York on Wednesday. It's likely on new Windows phones under Nokia's Lumia brand.

? SURFACE: Microsoft plans its own tablet computer, too. It's new territory for Microsoft, which typically leaves it to others to make devices using its software. Now, it will be competing against its partners. The Surface tablet will come in two versions, both with 10.6-inch screens, slightly larger than the iPad's. One model will run on phone-style chips, just like the iPad, and will be sold for a similar price. A heavier, more expensive version will run on Intel chips and be capable of running standard Windows applications. The Surface will go on sale on Oct. 26.

? NEW BLACKBERRYS: A year ago, Research In Motion Ltd. disclosed that it was working on a next-generation phone system for the BlackBerry, which now looks ancient next to the iPhone and Android devices. It was supposed to be out in time for this year's holiday season. That won't happen. In June, RIM pushed the release of BlackBerry 10 devices into early next year, saying it wasn't ready. That means RIM will not only compete with the new iPhone and Android devices out this fall, but it will also have to contend with the new Windows devices.

Factbox: Highlights of the Democratic Party election platform

Charlotte, North Carolina (Reuters) - The Democratic Party late on Monday unveiled its election platform, a non-binding political document that party delegates will vote to adopt at the national convention in Charlotte on Tuesday evening.

The document highlights a sharp divide in the economic and cultural agendas of the Democratic and Republican parties going into the November election.

The platform seeks higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans, backs same-sex marriage and a woman's right to have an abortion.

Below are some principles highlighted in the document called "Moving America Forward."

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

The Democratic Party platform supports gay marriage and equal rights for gay couples, marking a significant change from the party and Obama's stance four years ago.

The party's platform calls for a full repeal of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and is against constitutional amendments seeking to define marriage as between one man and one women, as the Republican platform supports.

"We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference," the platform document said.

ABORTION

The platform supports a woman's right to seek a "safe and legal" abortion, regardless of her ability to pay.

"We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right," the platform said. "Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy -- there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way."

The Republican Party's anti-abortion platform states that an unborn child has a fundamental right to life and makes no exceptions for pregnancies as a result of rape or incest.

MEDICARE

The Democratic Party opposes Republican plans to overhaul Medicare, the popular government-run healthcare program for the elderly, which Republicans argue is unsustainable.

"We will block Republican efforts to subject Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market through privatization," the platform document said, adding that nearly 50 million Americans rely on the program yearly.

The platform backs Obama's signature healthcare law. Its supporters say it improves care and benefits and aims to find cost savings by lowering reimbursements to hospitals and insurers and eliminating waste.

In other sections the platform calls for building on the healthcare law, which the Republican platform vows to work to repeal.

TAXES

Democrats call in their platform for extending tax cuts for the families who earn less than $250,000. The platform document notes the typical family has saved $3,600 during Obama's first term.

Obama is also fighting to extend tax relief for working families and people paying for college, while asking the wealthiest and corporations to "pay their fair share" -- a common refrain in his election pitch to voters.

The Democrats' plan says Romney tax proposals could raise taxes on typical families by at least $2,000, would cut taxes for those making over $3 million by an average of $250,000 and would create incentives to send jobs overseas.

The Republican platform pushes tax reform, broadening the tax base and lowering tax rates, which Republicans say will jump-start growth.

DEFENSE

The platform defends military funding cuts due to the harsh fiscal climate but says Democrats are committed to a strong military presence to ensure its global leadership and national security.

As commander in chief, President Obama has brought the war in Iraq to a close, dealt blows to the Taliban, and killed leaders of militant group Al-Qaeda, including Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, the platform said.

America and its allies have laid the foundation for a drawdown in Afghanistan and have begun bringing troops home.

"With the support of our allies, the President has outlined a plan to end the war in Afghanistan in 2014," the platform says, adding that the United States will not build permanent bases in Afghanistan.

Republicans have criticized the Obama administration for cutting military funding and being weak against nations facing international sanctions, such as Iran.

IMMIGRATION

The platform document said the American immigration system is in need of comprehensive reforms. Republicans are blamed for blocking past efforts.

Democrats seek to repair the system in a way that brings "undocumented immigrants out of the shadows" and requires them to "get right with the law, learn English, and pay taxes in order to get on a path to earn citizenship."

The Republican platform calls for a mandatory nationwide requirement that employers verify the legal status of their employees and rejects any amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Poll: Voters interested more in platforms than speeches

A study from the Pew Research Center shows potential voters are more focused on each party?s convention platforms than big-name speakers in Tampa and Charlotte.

ryanoncspanThe poll was taken before the Republican convention in Tampa and covers interest levels in four topics at each convention: reaction to two big-name speakers, the platform, and the roll call of states.

In both cases, public interest was highest in each party?s platforms and lowest in the roll call of states.

But in a surprise, despite a lot of media chatter about the Republican platform, there was a higher level of interest in the Democrats? platform.

Overall, 55 percent of those polled were interested in learning about the Democrats? platform while 52 percent were curious about the GOP platform.

The next highest interest level was in Bill Clinton?s upcoming speech at the Democratic convention, at 52 percent.

Among voters who identify as Democrat, Republican, or Independent, there were higher interest levels in the opposing party?s platforms, and equal interest among Independents in both party?s platforms.

One fact that jumped out in the survey was a huge falloff in voter interest in the Democratic convention. In 2008, 59 percent of those polled were interested in the Democrats convention in Denver, while the current interest level for Charlotte was 43 percent.

Interest levels in the GOP convention were similar to percentages in 2004 and 2008.

GOP platform goes heavy on constitutional references

Once people actually got to read or hear about the GOP platform, a history book or two could come in handy.

The Republicans published their 62-page platform earlier this week, which expectedly was praised by GOP supporters and ripped by critics.

It included a huge focus on the Constitution, with a whopping 61 references to the Constitution by name and extensive passages about amendments, rights?and the Democrats skirting constitutional issues.

An entire section is devoted to ?A Restoration of Constitutional Government,? and it included a plea to restore the balance between the legislative and executive branches.

The platform also includes quotes from James Madison and George Washington, and the proposal of amendments on human life and balanced budgets.

The constitutional theme was extended to the convention floor, especially on Wednesday night, when Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Paul Ryan talked extensively about constitutional issues.

Paul also brought up Madison in a discussion about the Supreme Court?s divided decision to uphold President Barack Obama?s health care plan.

?I think if James Madison, himself?the father of the Constitution?were here today he would agree with me: the whole damn thing is still unconstitutional!? Paul said.

Ryan concluded his speech with call back to the Founding Fathers.

?Each of these great moral ideas is essential to democratic government?to the rule of law, to life in a humane and decent society. They are the moral creed of our country, as powerful in our time, as on the day of America?s founding. They are self-evident and unchanging, and sometimes, even presidents need reminding, that our rights come from nature and God, not from government,? he said.

Critics took the GOP platform to task for its proposed human life amendment and its opposition to same-sex marriage.

So far, there is little information available on the Democratic platform. It should have a much different approach to same-sex marriage, health care, and taxes than the Republican platform.

Daily Kos: Don't Buy It: A conversation with communications ...

Last Sunday, Daily Kos published a review of communications maven and newly annointed author Anat Shenker-Osorio's thought-provoking (and conversation-stimulating) book, Don't Buy It: The Trouble with Talking Nonsense about the Economy. During this past week, the author and I carried on a further email discussion about the issues raised in her work about communicating on the economy. That discussion is reproduced below, and she is also making herself available in comments for users to ask questions. Enjoy! And please join in!

Head shot of

Anat Shenker-Osorio

How do you view your book as differing from Drew Westen's or from George Lakoff's work? What does it bring to the table that they don't, in terms of focus, expansion of ideas or different views?

I owe a great intellectual debt to George and Drew?both for specific analytical approaches and more generally for introducing the application of what are academic modes of analysis to real, live, political debates. Although their insights come from different fields, one essential critique they both bring is a long overdue call to stop trying to appeal to Enlightenment era reason and persuade via facts, figures and logic.

I take up aspects of what they've offered, in terms of appealing to emotion and recognizing the power of words to evoke and convey unconscious notions at odds with our best intentions. Then, I push these insights into the very concrete realm of advice for advocates struggling with how to convince a confused, overwhelmed and dejected public that progressive economic policies are the only way to improve things for our nation.

So, one difference is topical?this book is about how to talk about the economy. And another is that the findings here emerge from over 3 years of in the field research into how people make sense of and come to judgements, based on analysis of reams of written data, expert interviews and focus groups.

How many people do we need to get to adopt consistent use of a metaphor before it goes mainstream? What seems to be the crucial mass?

That's a tough one! Short of massive, longitudinal, psycho-linguistic experimentation?I'm not sure we could ever say for sure. To my knowledge, this hasn't been measured.

This said, the well-proven idea behind conceptual metaphor is that we all have access to any one of the set of them that exist for a concept. As members of a shared language community, the simplifications we rely upon for a complex concept like the economy are the same. The differences lie in our defaults?whether I (for example) am more likely to think and talk about the economy in comparing it to an object in motion whereas you (again, for example) tend to call upon natural elements for your comparison.

In a sense, all of the accessible metaphors are "mainstream"?understandable to all of us. But, repetition is what makes one more top of mind and that's what we need to have happen. With the better metaphors, of course?we have way too much repetition of the unhelpful ones.

Obviously media and politicians are necessary to bring on board if you want to change the language and the metaphors. Anyone else? (And sometimes even media and politicians aren't enough, correct?)

Yes, economists. Because there's a well-established tendency for people to assume they can't understand economic concepts and our lack of education on these topics (as I note in the book) makes them seem even more mysterious, Americans are more likely to believe in and turn to minted experts. In this case, that means economists.

Further, because pocketbook issues are so much on all our minds and thus tongues, the more people we have taking conscious pains to get the words about them right the better. When advocates are arguing for whatever particular policy is up for discussion, wage hikes, tax levels, regulations, if they do so grounded in a better model for what the economy actually behaves like, not only would their immediate argument make more sense, they'd bolster other ones up in the process.

Obviously, I'd like to see Hollywood screenwriters, journalist and other makers of mainstream discourse brought up to speed as well.

Can't adoption of new terms and modes of thinking take at least a generation? What if you don't have time, as in climate change, for example?

If they were truly "new" then, yes. But, as I mentioned above, they aren't. It isn't possible to invent a simplifying model for people from scratch. All you can do is activate and more readily bring to mind one that exists. In other words, we actually used to know a lot of the stuff this book asks us to make present and immediate for people.

But, this said, we've fallen so deeply into unhelpful rhetorical grooves it's not easy to start actively changing what we write and say. I compare this to writing with your non-dominant hand. When I grab a pen, I do it with my right hand and easily jot down what I need to do. This is akin to typing up that press release, or tweet or speech using the words and phrases you always have?the missive practically writes itself because we've all argued about whatever we're passionate about for so long, so many times. But, to actively go against what you're used to saying?that's like choosing to write with your left hand (in my case). It's awkward. It's slow. It's frustrating?especially with your right hand just sitting there!

You are right, we don't have time. One of my big laments in the book is the squandering of our opportunity to really have the biggest, most effective, conversation about what a just and sustainable economy can and should look like. I'd argue the biggest opening in that window was end of 2007/early 2008. It's not closed now, but people are no longer in the space of wondering what happened and what should be. We're now just hanging on trying to keep what little didn't go under.

What do you do when Republicans flat-out lie in an attack, in a manner that forces you to use their terms on a stance you don't believe in? Example: ?GOP attacks Obama as the biggest spender ever, as someone who's raised taxes.? This is utterly false. And the mode right now is to come back (with charts!) saying, "See! We DON'T spend! We freeze federal wages! We lower taxes!" This is fighting on their ground. Yes, it's correcting the facts, but raising taxes is what is needed, spending is what is NEEDED ? Yet their flat-out blatant lie forces us to end up defending a stance we don't believe in. How do we escape this linguistic thought trap? Do you correct that, even though it then means fighting on their turf? Or do you somehow try to shift it to: "And what's wrong with that? Government is good, etc."?

I recently got into a fierce debate with activists I admire who were intent upon broadcasting how Romney's tax plan was found to raise taxes on many groups. They found this "fact" (already of dubious use given how hard it is to break a frame using actual evidence) to be a real zinger. At first, I tried a simple one sentence rebuttal: ?I thought we were for taxes?? Sadly, things devolved from there.

I firmly believe that when we message from the other guy's values, we lose. This was true when we said abortion was about getting government out (thanks, Hyde Amendment!), claimed curbing energy consumption was about abating terrorism (let's drill in Alaska and build keystone!) and attempted to make our pro-immigrant case by saying we wanted them to "get right with the law." And it's equally true about economic issues.

The way I'd respond to this kind of flat out lie is to correct the facts without accepting the frame. So, to use your example, "It would be amazing if that were the case. I'd love to say we put even more teachers in your kids' classes, hired the best American workers to shore up our bridges and patch up our roads, and brought medical care within reach of your ailing grandparents. But we didn't?and it's high time we do." There's so much potential for humor in lieu of defensiveness (and charts).

By the end of the book, it seems we've almost moved from discussing language to undoing the holy belief in the Protestant work ethic (which, I agree, is disgraceful, dysfunctional prism through which to view the value of life as lived). Quite a different?and near impossible??undertaking, yes? Where do words leave off and ideas begin? Are they so entwined they're impossible to really completely separate, ever?

I'm not a fan of said ethic but I'd argue that's actually not the opponent I'm tackling here in the book. If people want to work crazy hours because they love their jobs, enjoy their colleagues, seek to avoid their spouse, are about to cure cancer, or whatever personal motivation propels this?more power to them. I personally love my work and do lots of it. I'm going to guess you and most of your readers are in this camp too.

But what I do want to see banished is the idea that we are supposed to work for the Economy. The idea that keeping It happy or growing, or healthy or what have you is our greatest responsibility, our moral duty?that's just sick. The economy is nothing outside of us so the notion that we owe it fealty is ridiculous; it's deeply damaging to all of us as workers and to our planet that must somehow endure a growth at all costs is good approach.

You urge the use of the metaphor of instability, an internal imbalance to describe income inequality instead of gaps, or vertical or scale metaphors. Yet isn't that so close to using the "body" metaphor you described earlier as NOT good to use? After all, dizziness, the feeling of unbalance or something feeling unstable is one that's experienced very physically, by the body.

Example: "Being off balance is a familiar and unpleasant experience that transcends demographic groups. No matter where you?re from or what you have, you?ve spun yourself into dizziness at one time or another. What this model refers to is an instability that can only be righted internally."

The critical thing in considering what a certain metaphor is likely to evoke is to ascertain what we'd call its entailments. More simply, the set of immediate associations we have with it. I would argue that the ability to feel off-balance or dizzy is not a salient feature of a human body. In other words, if people were asked to free associate about bodies, they'd talk about organs, feelings, health, perhaps bodily functions but dizziness wouldn't be top of mind.

Therefore, I'm not concerned that evoking internal imbalance necessarily brings with it the idea of a body. Many things depend upon balance to operate well?airplanes, cars, moving toys, other machines.

However, at the risk of compressing too much into one answer, it is actually important to have the conversation about inequality at both levels: how it affects the whole and how it affects specific individuals in known marginalized groups. We need the human element in the simplifying model because of all the economic issues I discuss in the book, inequality is the one most acutely relevant to the experience of people in our society. Humans experience the economy, so it's important for the model we use to talk about to allow for that.
