It really is estimated that more than 40 million workers inside the United states of america had to obtain emergency medical treatment for workplace-related injuries in the year 2003. This can be a staggering number when 1 considers the efforts most organizations have put into sustaining a safe workplace. In contemporary instances, several organizations have already been identified liable for injuries sustained in their areas of business. There?s a relationship that exists between workplace safety and profitability.

Every business, particularly these involved in industrial manufacturing, is constantly looking at methods to continuously boost their goods and processes. They comprehend that their profits are straight related towards the methods and means by which they generate their merchandise. However, as well a lot of organizations get caught up in drive for greater income and have a tendency to enable workplace safety to turn out to be an afterthought.

The charges linked with operating a sizable manufacturing facility in America are astounding. Workplace injuries spot a massive burden of expense and weakened productivity on an organization. These injuries may be reduced with appropriate arranging and careful interest to detail. Most workplace injuries are preventable. You can find a number of elements to think about, but keeping a protected and tidy function place is among the very best approaches to stop injury. Workers, as well, possess a responsibility in maintaining themselves safe from harm.

Workplace injuries spot an important burden on wellness care providers and insurance companies. As organizations continue to spend greater premiums for employee health care, one of the only indicates obtainable for cost recovery would be to increase the costs with the goods they generate. This places the burden of expense on the consumer, and makes it possible for businesses to ignore the root trigger of their workplace injuries. The concentrate here seems to be on maintaining a healthy relationship with shareholders, and not necessarily on keeping a healthful workforce.

It truly is intriguing to note that you can find record numbers of jobs, specially in the industrial sector, being sent overseas. There are a number of causes to account for this. Just about the most considerable factors is that American companies are in a position to shave their operating costs down to a fraction of their domestic costs, by capitalizing on less expensive labor in foreign markets. Foreign governments, eager for investment, are all also willing to accommodate the interests of large western organization. Far as well frequently, this comes at the expense of workplace safety.

If organizations want to be lucrative in the long-term, they need to reexamine their method to workplace safety and the health of their workers. Many businesses are sending jobs overseas, in order to benefit from inexpensive labor and relaxed labor laws. American businesses could be each lucrative and safety conscious. Through directed education campaigns and preemptive preparing, workplace injuries may be decreased within a significant way. Remember: a secure worker is actually a pleased worker, along with a satisfied worker can be a productive worker.

South Africa mourns mine violence victims

Hymns rang out in mourning Thursday for those killed in South Africa's bloodiest police action since apartheid, as President Jacob Zuma unveiled a wide-ranging probe into the unrest.

"We are shocked as a nation about what happened. None of us ever thought it would happen again," Anglican Bishop Johannes Seoka told the thousands of people gathered near Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine.

Police gunned down 34 miners one week ago during a wildcat strike that had already left eight other workers and two policemen dead.

After the bishop's remarks, the crowd burst into an apartheid-era Zulu funeral song, "Senzeni na", which means "What have we done?"

"Police and soldiers, what have we done to be killed?" the crowd sang.

Police kept their distance as tensions still ran high among workers, with security remarkably lighter than the heavy forces deployed here for more than a week.

"We don't want to see police today, they must stay far away," said Nkosinathi, a Lonmin miner who declined to give his last name for fear of reprisal.

"They bring back very ugly, very painful memories, they must move away."

Notably absent were politicians, who kept away to allow religious leaders to conduct the proceedings.

Instead, Zuma used the day to name one of the country's top legal minds, retired judge Ian Farlam, to head a wide-ranging commission of inquiry into not only the unrest but the labour conditions that fomented the unrest.

Mineworkers' strikes have turned increasingly violent this year. A key focus of the investigation will likely be the rivalry between the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the powerful National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

But platinum giant Lonmin, the unions, police and government agencies will also be forced to answer questions on whether they did anything to defuse the tension at the mine before it escalated into violence.

The inquiry will investigate any police orders to shoot, and whether the use of force was "reasonable and justifiable", said Zuma.

Police are also investigating the killings, while the independent police watchdog is looking into the conduct of the officers who opened fire at the crowd that was armed mainly with spears, clubs and machetes.

Lonmin and the nearby Impala Platinum mine closed to allow workers to attend the memorial, the centrepiece of ceremonies held across the country, as many of the victims were migrant workers whose bodies have already been returned to their home villages.

The other major service was in Mthatha, in the rural Eastern Cape province, that was home to 28 of the 34 killed by police.

Grief engulfed the Methodist church hall, with relatives of the dead weeping and wailing loudly.

"The Marikana massacre must be a lesson. It must unite the workers across the country to fight for equality," Mthatha Mayor Dingaani Myolo said.

The violence has been blamed on the rivalry between an aggressive AMCU seeking to gain membership from a dominant NUM, one of the country's most influential unions and a major ally of the ruling African National Congress.

About 3,000 rock drill operators have spearheaded the strike at Lonmin, which employs a total of 28,000 people at Marikana. The drillers also appear to be at the centre of disputes at nearby mines.

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant held talks with the AMCU late Tuesday, but she reported little movement on the strikers' demand for a monthly wage of 12,500 rand ($1,500, 1,200 euros).

They say they currently earn 4,000 rand. Lonmin says that if bonuses and other perks are included, the rock drillers earn around 11,000 rand, with a nine-percent increase set to take effect in October.

Airbuses suffer cockpit power failure, await fixes

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? As United Flight 731 climbed out of Newark with 107 people aboard, the pilot and first officer were startled to find screens that display crucial navigational information were blank or unreadable and radios were dead.

They had no way to communicate with air traffic controllers or detect other planes around them in the New York City area's crowded airspace.

"I made a comment to the captain about steering clear of New York City, not wanting to get shot down by USAF fighters," first officer Douglas Cochran later told investigators. He wasn't joking: "We both felt an extreme urgency to get this aircraft on the ground as soon as possible."

Within minutes, Cochran and the captain had turned around and safely landed the Denver-bound Airbus A320 at the Newark airport. Cochran later told investigators that clear weather might have been the only thing that saved them from a crash.

The January 2008 emergency was far from the first such multiple electrical failure in what is known as the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, and it wasn't the last, according to records reviewed by The Associated Press. More than 50 episodes involving the planes, which first went into service more than two decades ago, have been reported.

And it could be another few years before the last of the thousands of narrow-body, twin-engine jets in use in the U.S. and overseas are modified to counteract the problem. The Federal Aviation Administration issued an order in 2010 giving U.S. airlines four years to make the fixes. The FAA's European counterpart did the same thing in 2009.

While no accidents have been blamed on the problem, the pilots union in the U.S. wanted the FAA to give airlines just two years to comply, but the FAA rejected that.

Aviation safety consultant Douglas Moss said the FAA should have acted a lot more quickly.

"These things cost money and the industry is in bad shape, so you have the economics thrown into it. But if the end result is higher airfares and higher cost of transportation, then that is the price we have to pay to ensure a safe transport system," said Moss, a California-based commercial pilot with 34 years' experience, including 14 years flying Airbuses.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigator said long time frames for fixing problems are not uncommon, because of the inconvenience involved in grounding planes for repairs. And FAA spokeswoman Allison Duquette said the four-year window was determined by the estimated 46 hours required to fix each jet. Safety regulators put the cost at $6,000 per plane.

The Airbus A320 family includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321 models ? passenger jets with 100 to 220 seats.

France-based Airbus told NTSB investigators in 2008 that 49 electrical failures similar to the Newark emergency happened on its planes in the U.S. and abroad before that episode. Nearly half involved the loss of at least five of six cockpit displays.

Also, pilots who post to a website operated by NASA have described at least seven more instances of multiple electrical failure that forced them to abort takeoffs or make unscheduled landings. Four happened after the FAA directive was issued in 2010.

Rudy Canto, director of flight operations-technical for Airbus Americas, said that temporary electrical failures in all makes of jets aren't uncommon and that all planes have backup systems ? as well as backups to the backups ? to handle those situations. New Airbus models are equipped with an automatic power switchover to counteract failures like the one at Newark, Canto said.

But Patrick Smith, a commercial pilot since 1990 who has written extensively on aviation safety for www.askthepilot.com, said he has never experienced anything remotely similar to the multiple failures described by Cochran and others.

"I can't even recall a case of losing more than a single non-critical instrument, so the idea of all critical flight displays going out at once is pretty radical," Smith said.

Also, electrical failures that cause communication blackouts are more dangerous nowadays, given the post-Sept. 11 fear of terrorists seizing the cockpit.

It isn't known how many of the 633 A320-series jets operated by U.S. carriers are flying without the required modification because airlines do not have to notify the FAA about each one. United said it has completed work on about 90 percent of its fleet of 152 Airbuses covered by the FAA's directive, and Delta said it has made the fix on 124 of its 126 planes. USAirways said it has modified "more than 60 percent" of its 189 affected Airbuses.

About 2,400 of the planes in service with non-U.S. carriers are required to make the modification, according to Airbus. A spokesman for the European Aviation Safety Agency said the organization doesn't have figures on the number of planes fixed.

A pilot who recounted a 2009 incident on NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System said that 28 years and 20,000 hours of flying experience couldn't help him explain why the cockpit was "like walking into a simulator with no power or batteries on ... only light was the moon." The website does not identify the airlines or airports involved.

On the Newark flight, Cochran told investigators, nearly all cockpit indicators and gauges were lost, including his standby attitude indicator, a display that enables pilots to keep a plane at the correct angle. His primary attitude indicator also failed, but re-emerged shortly before landing.

"If they'd had bad weather, they could have lost the airplane, absolutely," said Moss, who has conducted accident investigations and served as an expert witness in aviation cases. "It was just dumb luck that it was daytime and the visibility was good."

In the Newark tower, a chilling thought occurred to controllers as Flight 731 circled back without warning: Was this another 9/11 about to unfold?

"You could see him making a hard right and then another turn; he's deviating off his course and loaded with fuel," a controller working that day recalled. The controller spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of rules against talking to the media. "He turned back east and was going right toward New York, and I thought, 'Oh, here we go again.'"

A 2006 failure described by Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch was similarly alarming. Ninety minutes into an EasyJet flight from Spain to England, electronic instrument displays and radio communications went dead. As the pilots struggled to fix the problem, the Airbus stopped sending radar signals for 10 minutes.

With "no means of knowing where the aircraft was or what had happened to it," French air traffic controllers diverted another plane that would have passed through the same airspace less than 20 seconds apart, according to the British report.

The plane landed safely in England with the pilots trying unsuccessfully to reach the control tower with cellphones. They told investigators they worried they would be intercepted by military aircraft if they tried to land at another airport.

Bill Bozin, Airbus Americas vice president for safety, said the company took steps to address the problem before the Newark emergency, issuing two service bulletins in 2007 recommending electrical system modifications. Unlike a regulatory agency, an airplane manufacturer can't require airlines to make safety upgrades.

Bozin said increased awareness of the problem has improved the situation "immensely" even though many planes are still flying without the required modification ? an automatic power switchover.

"With both Airbus, through its communication with its customers, and FAA, which has put out safety bulletins on this issue, we feel that the procedures have been sufficiently emphasized that we are safe right now even before we get the ultimate solution, which is the automatic switchover," he said.

While the NTSB has called the electrical failures "a significant safety risk" on takeoffs and landings in low visibility, long gaps between when a safety recommendation is issued and when airlines must carry it out are not uncommon, an investigator in the Flight 731 probe said.

"I would love for it to be done immediately as a safety protocol, but that can't happen," said Scott Warren, team leader of an NTSB group that investigates electrical and hydraulic failures. "That puts a huge burden on the operators to ground the planes every time a safety recommendation is made. So you have to evaluate whether it makes sense to wait a month, two months, four months, or more."

Exclusive: Ex-Penn State pres. reveals his own abusive past

Graham Spanier, the former Penn State University president who stepped down in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, told ABC News today that he was a victim of child abuse so severe that he required several surgeries to correct the damage.

His history as a victim, he said, was a deeply personal rejoinder to those critics who accuse him of trying to cover up Sandusky's crimes and not caring about the children.

"I've never met anyone who has had a higher level of awareness [about child abuse,]" Spanier said in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Josh Elliott.

Spanier, 64, is on a campaign to resurrect his once pristine reputation. Though not charged with a crime, the findings of an independent investigation accuse him of failing to prevent a "child sexual predator harming children for over a decade."

The abuse he sustained at the hands of his father, a working class immigrant, began when he was a child and continued through his adolescence. Spanier said he has had four surgeries in his adulthood to correct problems with his breathing, face and head as a result of the injuries.

"It resulted in, of course, some emotional scarring, but also some substantial physical damage," he said of the abuse.

Before his tenure as a university administrator, Spanier was a professor specializing in the study of dysfunctional families and child abuse, an interest he said resulted directly from his childhood.

FOR AN EXCLUSIVE ABC NEWS INTERVIEW WITH GRAHAM SPANIER, TUNE IN TO "NIGHTLINE" TONIGHT AT 11:35 P.M. EDT.

Spanier objects to the findings of the Freeh Report calling it "wrong in its conclusions" and denying the accusation that he "conspired to conceal a known child predator."

Spanier insists when an assistant football coach reported seeing Sandusky acting suspiciously with a boy in the team showers in 2001, he was only made aware that Sandusky had engaged in "horseplay" with a child.

An independent investigation ordered by the unviersity, the so-called Freeh Report, and others have questioned why Spanier did not further investigate Sandusky after learning even that information.

"Never in my time as president of Penn State did I ever receive a report or even a hint that Jerry Sandusky was engaged in child abuse, a sexual act, criminal activity or anything resembling that with any child. Had I known that, or even suspected it, I would have forcefully intervened. But I never heard a report like that," he said.

Spanier said he had only met Sandusky once and was only marginally involved when in 1998 and again in 2001 reports were made that Sandusky was seen engaged in inappropriate behavior with a child.

"I do not get involved in police matters. I always had a very hands-off attitude and issues pertaining to people were dealt with by the police, by human resources, or by supervisors in various areas of the university," he said of the 1998 incident. He also noted that police, the state Department of Public Welfare and prosecutors all determined that Sandusky had not molested a child at that time.

In 2001, however, Spanier was copied on an email about another Sandusky incident, witnessed by assistant coach Mike McQueary who heard sexual noises and saw an underage boy in the shower.

In emails two administrators, Athletic Director Tim Curley and now retired Vice President Gary Schultz, proposed not alerting the authorities but instead letting Sandusky off with a warning and the promise that he would get "professional help."

Spanier agreed to that plan. However, he noted in an email that by not bringing the accusations to police they would be "vulnerable for not having reported it."

Penn State's Ex-President Fights for His Reputation

That phrase has dogged Spanier and was crucial in the Freeh's reports assessment of what he knew and how he failed to act.

"'Vulnerable' was not best choice of a term," Spanier told ABC News, adding that "it was a reaction to the possibility that we didn't want this to happen."

Spanier said he had "no recollection of being concerned" that the school might be held legally liable.

Spanier recalled the anger with the university when the grand jury indicted Sandusky, leading ultimately to Spanier's demotion to professor and the firing of legendary football coach Joe Paterno.

"I opposed the firing [of Paterno]... There could be riots, it could be a rush to judgment, they knew it was his last season" and Paterno should have been allowed to finish the season, he said.

Spanier said he and Paterno had secretly signed agreement that the coach would retire at the end of 2012.

More Costs of War: Suicides and Mental Trauma of Military Family ...

By Ann Wright

Seven months ago, in December, 2011, Brian Arredondo, age 24, hanged himself in a shed in his mother?s backyard. Brian was the brother of US Marine Corps Lance Corporal Alexander Arredondo, who was killed in Iraq in 2004. For seven years Brian had had difficulties dealing with the death of his brother.

Brian, like so many military brothers, sisters, spouses, children and parents, fell into the depths of depression following the death of his brother.

These difficulties in coping with his brother?s death played out in Brian in his depression, dropping out of school, using alcohol and drugs, being in and out of drug rehab facilities, in continuing incidents with police for disorderly conduct and finally in suicide.

After the death of their son Alex in Iraq, Brian?s father Carlos Arredondo and his stepmother Melida travelled the country reminding the public of those dying in America?s wars on Iraq and Afghanistan-Americans, Iraqis and Afghans. Brian had joined them at Veterans for Peace events and at Occupy Boston. The Arredondos are now embarked on a mission to better understand the suicides that are occurring in military families.

At the national Veterans for Peace (VFP) conference in Miami, Florida, on August 9, 2012, Carlos told VFP members that virtually each time they have spoken at public events about Brian?s suicide, after the program, a member of the audience will tell them that they have had someone in their family who has attempted suicide or committed suicide. The Arredondos say that from their first speaking engagements following Brian?s suicide, that they have found an epidemic of suicides and mental trauma in military families.

We know from statistics kept by the US military, Veterans Affairs and local law enforcement officials, that 18 veterans a day commit suicide.

Brian?s death represents an unknown number of members of military families who have committed suicide and the United States military is not attempting to keep track of this aspect of the costs of war on families of military personnel

In 2010, Deborah Mullen, the wife of the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at the Military Health System annual conference, that she was shocked that military family member suicides are not being tracked by the military. She said ??we are still discovering, still revealing, fissures and cracks in the family support system.? http://www.jcs.mil/speech.aspx?id=1521

Mrs. Mullen said that ?military families, not unlike our troops, experience the same depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, and headaches. They break into cold sweats ? lose concentration ? suffer panic attacks ? and come to dread contact with the outside world. Some lapse into what is known as ?anticipatory grief.?

As one spouse put it, ?We?re grieving as if they?re already dead, and they?re not.?

Mrs. Mullen added, ?As a result, many spouses are unable even to get out of bed ? to get dressed, prepare meals, or leave the house. Some won?t even get their children off to school, leaving the care of little ones to the hands of older siblings. In 2009 alone, 300,000 prescriptions for psychiatric drugs were provided to military dependents under the age of 18. Some are no doubt warranted, but I worry that we don?t fully understand the long-term consequences of these medications.?

Presentations of Carlos and Melida Arredondo at the Veterans for Peace National Convention, August 8-12, 2012

Carlos Arredondo?s Presentation:

Thank you for inviting us to speak to the national convention of Veterans for Peace. As some might know, the South Florida chapter of Veterans for Peace is named after my eldest son, US Marine Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo who was killed in Iraq in 2004, seven and a half years ago.

Today, I am going to talk to you about both of my sons, both of whom are dead because of war.

Less than eight months ago, our youngest son, Brian Luis Arredondo, age 24, hanged himself in a shed in the backyard of his Mother?s property in Massachusetts.

Our family is actively grieving Brian?s suicide and trying to comprehend how both of our boys are dead at a young age, both by such violent methods.

Brian was never the same after the death of his elder brother Alexander.

Nor was I. The day Alex died I set myself on fire at our home in Hollywood, Florida, about twenty miles north of Miami where the VFP convention is. The day I set myself on fire in the US Marine van that came to advise me of Alex?s death, my Mother, tried to stop me when the Casualty Assistance Company did not. She pulled away the gas can from me. She pulled on me to get out of the van. Only by the grace of God did she not get burned since she was right next to me when the explosion occurred. She noticed the socks on my feet were on fire and pulled them off of me and still did not get burned.

Brian was visiting his Mother in Maine when Alex was killed and saw on television as breaking news my setting the US Marine van and myself on fire.

Brian and Alex had been very close as children. When Alex joined the military, Brian began to lose his way. He stopped going to school and stopped working.

A short time after Alex?s death, Brian confessed to me that he walked the streets waiting for a bus or a truck so he could jump in front of it. That would be the first of several suicide attempts that Brian would make.

At Brian?s funeral mass, I gave the eulogy and openly discussed how I had been struggling with mental health issues myself from Alex?s death and how I felt culpable for not aiding Brian more in getting the help he needed. I had recognized Brian?s pain ? his anxiety and depression because I was experiencing the same. Yet, I seemed to be powerless to help him.

Since Alex?s death seven years ago, I have experienced problems with my physical health including a brain cyst and Bell?s Palsy.

Since Brian?s death eight months ago, I have been experiencing high blood pressure and have gained 20 pounds.

In speaking with medical doctors, I have been told that grieving can often show itself with both physical and mental health problems.

In the years after Alex?s death, I travelled around the United States talking about the effects of war. I found the work that I have done for peace and justice helped me cope with Alex?s death. I have felt useful and have been inspired and supported by so many people who I have met and worked with ? Ann Wright, Medea Benjamin. Bruce Macdonald, VFP?s Smedley Butler chapter in Boston and many other people in this room and more.

I find it very important to meet with other Latinos and talk about my sons so that the Latino families are aware of the ?side effects? to military service and how it impacts the whole family. It affects the family as soon as the decision is made for a loved one to join the military, through deployment and often beyond. We have met families who are often torn apart due to different opinions on military service. The consequences can be great.

M?lida and I have our good and our bad days. My Mom has been in the US four months this year, which has helped us both.

When Brian died, the Massachusetts peace community came together and had a peace vigil to remember him the following day where several hundred people showed up. Brian?s graveside service included many Vets with Veterans for Peace flags flying in the wind at Brian?s graveside. Mel and I are very grateful to have the Vets for peace honor Brian in this way.

Mel and I are focusing on suicide survivor and gold star family support groups. We have met many families who have experienced suicide with their families and military suicide.

Though not many, there are other families who have lost a loved one to combat and then their siblings to suicide. Meeting these families can be hard, but it can be healing. It makes realize that our family is not alone.

Mel and I are also working with activist writers to try to get our family?s story written to remember our sons and hopefully help others.

Thank you for your support and thank you to Veteran?s for Peace.

Melida Arredondo?s Presentation

When a family member joins the military, the family is also drafted.

In retrospect: I realize now that both our boys were targeted by military recruiters for being from low income, Latino and divorced families.

Over the years, Carlos and I wonder how this all happened to our family. Slowly, we came to realize that what affects us also impacts other families no matter race or color of skin ? the connection between those families and ours is that we are low income. So I?m speaking on behalf of all the other families who are unaware of how the economics of recruitment in this country works.

According to the US Census, families and their children are experiencing the highest degree of poverty since the 1960s.

Much of the work Carlos and I do is to aid and support military families. Some of the efforts we have successfully worked on include speaking with the two Massachusetts Secretaries of Veterans Affairs to share the economic difficulties face by military families during deployments and if a loved one dies.

Most recently before Memorial Day, a new law, called the Valor Act, was passed in Massachusetts expanding state assistance to families who have someone who is deployed and families who have lost a loved one. (Let me clarify that due to divorce or if the service member is married, many parents receive do not receive any life insurance ? which is the case in our family.)

Massachusetts is a special case, however, where services for Veterans and Military families are the best in the nation compared to other states. So I ask you to consider taking on the task of seeing what your VFP chapter can do with legislation in your state to better support services for your military families. The needs of these families are not recognized.

Peace and justice work should be combined with support for military families. These acts of kindness further the message of the peace and justice community.

In addition, education of parents who are likely to have their children recruited is an important place to target peace messages. A public awareness campaign can target neighborhoods combining the realities of warfare and the violence on the streets.

It is vital for peace and justice efforts to be targeted to the society-at-large and not continue simply preaching to the converted.

We must find venues to reach out to new people. For example, recently, two members of the Smedley Butler VFP chapter (Boston), my family and I went to the finish line for the Pan Mass Challenge, a bicycle race that raises funds for cancer.

We did this to support John Niles a 75 year old VFP member who had ridden 80 miles that day. We had several VFP flags, a peace and an American flag waving in the Cape Cod air at the finish line. Dozens of people who had raced or who were cheering on cyclists came up to us and thanked us for being there and had conversations with us.

Carlos has run to the finish line of the Boston marathon with the peace flag several years, and we?ve attended the 4th of July celebrations in Boston with the peace message and countless other public forums. We attend many events with a message of peace whether we are invited or not.

Finally, let me put a plug in for Military Families Speak Out. This organization is facing financial hardship and lost most of its staff. Carlos and I are members and we?ve worked with MFSO often on lobbying on the state and national level. Through MFSO we?ve met other families who are faced with similar situations or have lost their loved ones as a result of war. I am asking you to consider supporting MFSO by going to www.mfso.org and by make a donation.

We did not want Alex to join the Marine Corps. Coming from Costa Rica where no army exists, we simply feared. Alex joined, he died, Brian has died and Carlos and I are left. The remainder of our families is in Costa Rica where Mom lives.

Carlos and I appreciate all of the support that VFP has provided us over the years as well as the opportunities to work side-by-side for peace ?in Crawford, Minneapolis at the RNC or in Washington DC.

I want to take this moment to honor our sons ?

Alexander Arredondo, Presente!

Brian Arredondo ? Presente!

Peace to you all. Muchas gracias. Thank you.

Microbiologists find new approach to fighting viral illnesses

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? By discovering how certain viruses use their host cells to replicate, UC Irvine microbiologists have identified a new approach to the development of universal treatments for viral illnesses such as meningitis, encephalitis, hepatitis and possibly the common cold.

The UCI researchers, working with Dutch colleagues, found that certain RNA viruses hijack a key DNA repair activity of human cells to produce the genetic material necessary for them to multiply.

For many years, scientists have known that viruses rely on functions provided by their host cells to increase their numbers, but the UCI study -- led by microbiology & molecular genetics professor Bert Semler -- is the first to identify how the RNA-containing picornaviruses utilize a DNA repair enzyme to do so.

Study results appear in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of Aug. 20.

RNA viruses have ribonucleic acid as their genetic material (rather than deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA). Notable human diseases caused by RNA viruses include SARS, influenza, hepatitis C, West Nile fever, the common cold and poliomyelitis.

The UCI and Dutch researchers examined one group of RNA viruses, called picornaviruses, using biochemical purification methods and confocal microscopy to see how they co-opt the functions of a cellular DNA repair enzyme called TDP2 to advance their replication process.

"These findings are significant because all known picornaviruses harbor the target for this DNA repair enzyme, despite the fact that their genetic material is made up of RNA rather than DNA. Thus, identifying drugs or small molecules that interfere with the interaction between the virus and TDP2 could result in a broad-spectrum treatment for picornaviruses," said Semler, who also directs UCI's Center for Virus Research.

By targeting a host cell function required for viral replication and not the virus itself, he added, the primary challenge of antiviral drug resistance may be sidestepped.

As part of their survival mechanism, RNA viruses mutate often, and drugs intended for them usually become ineffective over time. HIV, for example, rapidly mutates, necessitating a combination therapy employing a number of antiviral agents.

A drug that blocks RNA viruses from hijacking DNA repair enzymes may avoid these resistance issues. Semler's lab plans to screen mixtures of drug candidates to find ones that inhibit this process in cells infected by the human rhinovirus, the predominant cause of the common cold.

Richard Virgen-Slane, Janet Rozovics, Kerry Fitzgerald, Tuan Ngo, Wayne Chou and Paul Gershon of UCI and Gerbrand van der Heden van Noort and Dmitri Filippov of Leiden University in the Netherlands participated in the study, which received support from the American Asthma Foundation and a National Institutes of Health Public Health Service grant.
