Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: American Children ...

Over 250,000 American children under the age of 6 are too heavy for car-safety seats designed for their age-group. Makers of car-safety seats are having to make sturdier models to ensure levels of safety for these seriously obese and overweight children are maintained.

As the American obesity epidemic gains pace and spreads through all age groups, the number of children under 6 who are obese is growing at an alarming rate.

Standard safety-seats are designed for children who weigh less than 40 pounds. Most of the children who were found to be over the limit were three years old. For a three-year-old to weigh over that amount he/she is either incredibly tall or seriously overweight.

Researchers at a Safety Center, John Hopkins Hospital, said if a child weighs more than the seat's weight limit the risks of injury during a car accident are much greater.

Lead researcher Lara Trifiletti said she and her colleagues began to notice that more and more children were very obese and their car-seat technicians were finding it hard to provide car seats to fit them.

(Although Lara Trifiletti worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital at the time of the research, she now works at The Children's Research Institute, Ohio University).

Of the children found to be too heavy for their car seats, 190,000 were 3 years old.

You can read about this study in the journal Pediatrics (April).

3-year-olds are not mature enough (or tall enough) for booster seats, which can be used for slightly older children (booster seats use the car's seat belts).

Five years ago 23% of American children between the ages of two and five were overweight, 10% were obese. The figures today are expected to be higher.

In the nineties, new diet movements blamed the introduction of high carb diets during the seventies for the growth in obesity and overweight in the USA.

Several options for weight control have been present in the USA for the last ten years. Different diets, such as Atkins, The Zone, The South Beach have been around for over a decade now. The increase in obesity over the last ten years has still been accelerating despite new diets being introduced and having had a while to prove themselves nationally.

Many write in to Medical News Today stressing that the focus in the USA has been too much on what people should eat, rather than how much exercise people do. What's the good of telling people to eat steaks and salads (low carb), or keep their total calories down, or eat less fat, or cut down on sugars, if they can't keep it up for more than a year or so.

As one lady from Kansas said:

'Our family, me, my husband and our two 10-year-old children, all used to be overweight. We tried every diet - low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat, everything. They all worked for a bit, then the weight came back on. We then decided to go for speedwalking. We have been speedwalking for 60 minutes a day, the whole family together, for one year now. The weight has come off, and stayed off. Diets work, but not for long. Exercise is easier to sustain if you choose something that is not too strenuous. We decided on walking as that was something we could all do - rather than anything too hard. And it has worked for us. If I had a three-year-old now I would take a stroller and have the child walk part of the way - we could all slow down for him.'

A New Ocean Health Index Shows Clean Water but Poor Management [Interactive]

We regularly hear calls to improve ?ocean health.? Health is a powerful metaphor, but scientists have had no way to measure it and therefore no means to evaluate how the world's oceans are doing. More than 60 researchers from a cross section of disciplines and institutions, including the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have created the Ocean Health Index to do just that. It rates the health of ocean waters bordering 171 coastal countries and territories. Each nation's overall score is the average of scores for 10 widely held public goals for healthy oceans, including sustainable food provision, recreation, fishing opportunities and biodiversity.

The index, which was published in August in Nature, is not a measure of how pristine the ocean is. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Instead it measures how sustainably the ocean is providing the things people care about. The goals are universal measures of ecosystem health?all 10 must be met for a country's ocean to be rated as healthy?but the relative importance of each goal can vary from place to place.

Factoring human goals into assessments of ocean health is a radical departure from traditional conservation approaches. Yet public policy and conservation organizations worldwide are rapidly converging on the view that people are now a fundamental part of every ecosystem on the earth, and any effective management strategy must embrace this reality. If we focus only on excluding people from nature, conservation plans are doomed to fail.

The index is an important first step. Countries cannot make progress on ocean health without first knowing where they stand. In that sense, the index is a key benchmark. Later this year the NCEAS and various partners will test its application in the U.S., Fiji and Brazil. Policy makers and managers could use the index to guide decision making?for example, about whether offshore wind energy should be expanded in the U.S., whether land or ocean conservation measures will benefit coral reefs in Fiji and how marine-zoning plans in Brazil might affect overall ocean health.

Of course, various people or adjacent countries might put different priorities on different goals. As a tool that lays them all out, the index can aid any negotiations by identifying trade-offs and synergies.

Silver Publishing Author: Catriana Sommers Interview | Top 2 ...

Hello, Catriana, can you tell us a little bit about your background?

I?m initially from the east coast, the North Carolina area, and now I reside in Washington. I?ve always been interested in writing, my overactive imagination had to have some outlet, and goodness knows it wasn?t going to be through art! I?m currently happily married with two wonderful dogs. Growing up, I wanted to be a singer, and during my high school years I even performed a few solos in chorus. I believe my biggest audience was for when I played Glenda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz.

What was your first book and how long did it take to get it published?

My first novel was Destined, although my first release was Call on Me. It didn?t take very long to publish, Silver Publishing is pretty awesome concerning release dates. For ?Destined?, I believe it was around 6 months, and ?Call on Me? was around four.

When did you start writing m/m romance? What about this genre interested you the most?

I started writing M/M romance around two to three years ago with fanfiction. I would have started earlier, but I was honestly too afraid to delve into a genre I wasn?t familiar with. I?ve done a lot of research and picked people?s brains for as much information as I can concerning intimate acts between two men, but writing the actual relationships themselves came easily. I grew up around gay men, many of whom are good friends I still keep in contact with from high school. I merely drew from those fond memories to write the romance aspect of my stories.

How long did it take you to get published? How many books have you written thus far?

Well, I could say it took me around a year after writing my first novel to be picked up. I was rejected numerous times by other publishers, but an amazing author who some may know as Rawiya really helped me in introducing myself to publishers and submitting. I?ve currently written two short stories (?Call one Me? and ?My Will?) and two novels (?Destined? and ?Bound by Blood?). My second novel is due for an October release.

Do you write full time?

I currently make enough money to write full time, yes.

Looking back was there something in particular that helped you to decide to become a writer? Did you choose it or did the profession choose you?

My friends helped me. To be honest, had they not pushed me and believed in me, I never would have found the courage to submit my stories.

On a typical writing day, how would you spend your time?

Procrastinating! But in all seriousness, it depends on how good the muse is going. Some days, I only get a little bit of writing done, others, I end up writing between 3-10k a day. I find sitting on my laptop and listening to music helps a lot more than sitting on my desktop doing the same thing. I have no idea why.

Do you write right through or do you revise as you go along?

A little bit of both, but mostly I plow right through and worry about heavy revisions after the fact. I?ve learned that trying to go back to fix every little thing does nothing more than prevent you from completing your book. I find as I charge right through I begin to develop other ideas to flesh out what I want for later. I typically either keep these in my head or write them down, so when I go back through I know what to keep and what to toss.

When it comes to plotting, do you write freely or plan everything in advance?

It depends on what I?m writing. The Arcanus Series is large and growing, I have to do some amount of plotting or I?ll end up with a jumbled mess. Same thing with any novel I plan on being around 100k. For short stories, I typically plot it out in my head and pants the rest.

What kind of research do you do before and during a new book?

Before, I did a lot of research into intimacy between gay and lesbian couples. While I have yet to write lesbian erotica, I do want to do so in the future, so I read books, fiction and non-fiction. I?ve been reading up on war tactics and strategies as my series will eventually be delving into an intense war. At the moment I?m reading up on steampunk, as my series has some steampunk elements within. Also when I write and I need a landscape or other scenery, I tend to google images that help visualize what I?d like. Another good site for this is deviantArt.

How much of yourself and the people you know manifest into your characters? How do you approach development of your characters? Where do you draw the line?

Well, I can freely admit that one character in Bound by Blood was directly inspired by my friend, Keith. In fact, he wrote me up one day, talking about how much he loved my writing and was proud of me, and I knew how much he was into vampires so I said ?Hey man, you wanna be a vampire in my story?? And of course who can turn that down? So there?s a character named Kien Varian who is introduced in the first chapter of the novel, and while he?s not exactly like my friend Kieth, there are quite a few similarities and he absolutely loves the guy. That was a lot of fun, although I?m not sure if I?d make a habit of it. I believe any good author will have a piece of them in their stories and various characters. I?ve been told by my parents that my writing style ?sounds? like me. Wasn?t entirely sure how to take that, actually.

How long does it take for you to complete a book you would allow someone to read? Do you write straight through, or do you revise as you go along?

Whoo boy. The first draft of Bound by Blood took two years, mostly because I also wrote ?Destined? the same year and didn?t get back to ?Bound by Blood? until after it was published. ?Destined? went through five revisions(and is undergoing another, because I feel it needs it) which also took me about a year. So I would say it takes me around 6-8 months to finish the first draft, and then another 6 months to complete the novel in its entirety. For ?Bound by Blood?, I actually had two people reading over the second draft as I went through revisions, so it went through three sets of revisions thanks to betas.

Writers often go on about writer?s block. Do you ever suffer from it, and what measures do you take to get past it?

I do suffer from writer?s block. Usually, I try and write something less stressful, like a fanfic. There?s no pressure when it comes to fanfiction, because it?s a hobby, like gardening. If I?m stuck on a scene for one story, sometimes jumping to another story helps. If writer?s block is too bad, I?ll force myself to take a few days to a week off and that usually solves the problem.

When someone reads one of your books for the first time, what do you hope they gain, feel or experience?

My biggest goal is for people to enjoy reading what I enjoyed writing.

Can you share three things you?ve learned about the business of writing since your first publication?

1) Don?t submit something you?re not 100% happy with.

2) Get a beta reader! Someone who will be straight up and honest with you and not inflate your ego. Also listen to them. If they tell you there?s something wrong with your character or a scene, don?t dismiss it off hand because you feel it?s perfect. Chances are, if your beta has an issue, the readers will have issues too.

3) Ask questions. Do not be afraid to ask anything and everything. And for the love of all that?s holy, don?t be afraid to speak your mind. If you see something you don?t like going on with your book, don?t stay quiet just because you?re the new guy. I have a really bad habit of not speaking up because I?m afraid of making people upset, but in the end your book is yours. Make sure you?re happy with all aspects of it.

Does the title of a book you?re writing come to you as you?re writing it, or does it come before you even begin the first sentence?

Can I admit I?m horrid at coming up with titles? Because I am. Horrid. I eventually end up crossing my fingers and hoping the title doesn?t sound absolutely stupid once I finally drag one out of my head.

How would you describe your sense of humor? Who and what makes you laugh?

I don?t think I?m very funny, although my husband would beg to differ. I?m the person who cracks a joke and then there?s awkward silence among the group. I do find my husband to be hilarious, he comes up with the wittiest things at the drop of a hat. Sometimes I get lucky and I deliver a real winner, but it?s few and far between.

What is the most frequently asked (author name) question?

I?m not entirely sure what this is asking, but the question I often get asked is ?What inspires you?? The short answer is: Everything.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on a freelance graphic novel job for a successful webcomic studio. After that, I have plans to do a Christmas sequel for ?Call on Me?.

What was the best piece of advice you?ve received with respect to the art of writing? How did you implement it into your work?

Don?t compare yourself to other authors. I used to do this, and to a certain extent I still do. Mostly, I try to take aspects of writing styles I like and attempt to incorporate it into my own style. Not quite there yet, but I believe I?m getting better.

When it comes to promotion, what lengths have you gone to in order to increase reader-awareness of your work?

I?ve joined numerous Yahoo!Groups, I have a twitter, facebook, tumblr, blogspot, and a deviantArt page(although I?ve had that for about 9 years). I even promoted myself to my fanfiction crowd once I became published. There are a few people who have followed me to my original works, and those people are amazing. I cannot convey how much I appreciate their support. Now that I?m back in the states, I plan to approach a few bookstores and hope they?ll carry my series. Right now, I?m doing a few writing challenges as well as hosting other authors on my blog.

Writing is obviously not just how you make your living, but your life-style as well. What do you do to keep the creative ?spark? alive ? both in your work and out of it?

My imagination is always going. Always. It?s not a switch I can cut on or off, so there?s always creativity there, it just might not want to come out as writing. If I?m not in a writing mood, I draw. I?m not very good, but practice makes perfect and I?m already seeing improvements in my art as the years go by.

What kind of books do you like to read?

Science Fiction/Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, some Young Adult titles, Fantasy, and sometimes just straight up romance.

If you weren?t a writer what would you be?

A hobby shop owner, if possible.

Where did you get the idea for the stories you write?

They really just come to me. Sometimes from dreams, but mostly it?s all random.

When it comes to the covers of your books, what do you like or dislike about them?

Reese Dante makes the covers for Silver, so I have absolutely no objections. They were also generous enough to allow me to hire an artist for my Arcanus Series, so I have zero complaints about my covers.

Aside from writing, what else do you enjoy doing?

Drawing, singing, table top Role Playing Games?s and Magic: The Gathering. I play video games, mostly RPG?s, driving along scenic routes and long walks around my area. I hate going up the steep hills, but it?s still pretty.

Any special projects coming out soon we should watch for?

?Bound by Blood? comes out October and I have plans to write another short story that will be a sequel to ?Call on Me?. I had a few people want to know more about the characters, so I?ve decided to revisit that world.
New writers are always trying to glean advice from those with more experience. What suggestions do you have for new writers?

A lot of them are things I?ve already mentioned. Don?t compare yourself to other writers. Don?t submit anything you?re not 100% comfortable with, even if you?re writing for a Call to Submission. Finish what you start! Don?t let self-doubt plague you and keep you from finishing. Make sure you know what you?re getting into with a publisher. Ask around, ask them for a sample contract, surf around for a publisher that suits you and not just for who has the biggest name.

What future projects do you have in the works?

Book three of the Arcanus Series will be titled ?Dethroned?. I?m also working on a YA novel called ?Righteous Path?.

From ?Bound by Blood? (Unedited):

?Oh!? Kien sat up in his seat as she slid down, his eyes lighting up. ?Is that? Why I do believe it is! It?s Caryn Ilnari. Hells and flames, I haven?t seen her in decades.?

?Who?? Liari tilted her head, giving him a look. She had a feeling she would be on her own tonight, her cousin had that gleam in his eyes.

?The future mother of my children, of course.?

Oh boy. Her cousin could now be classified as ?complete loss? this rising. She wondered who to feel sorry for the most, herself or the poor Ilnari woman who was about to suffer Kien?s attentions. Liari loved her cousin dearly, he was more like a brother than her own, but even she could admit one had to be?.special to appreciate his wiles.

?Um, well?I wish you luck. With the courting. And reproducing.?

With a sigh to make any love struck fool jealous, Kien patted her head and graced her with a sympathetic smile. ?One day, you?ll understand, my dear. You?ll find that special someone, perhaps the Lotros boy -?

?Ew!?

?And you?ll want to have lots of babies by him. Or at least enjoy the act. It?s really the act that?s the best part.? His brows furrowed in a thoughtful frown. ?Well, raising a child isn?t so bad, I suppose.?

She found herself curious. ?Kien, I hear you?ve been alive for a really long time. Have you ever had any children??

For a moment, she saw his mask slip, revealing an oddly somber and serious expression that pulled at her heartstrings. Their eyes met and without having to say a word, Liari simply knew, and the knowledge had her eyes stinging with unshed tears.

Oh?oh Kien.

Then the look vanished completely and he grinned. ?I have you.?

From ?Destined?(Very Spoilerish):

?Father, I?? Timidly, Briae moved between his legs, resting her head on his chest. A small sigh left her when his arms wrapped around her tiny body. ?I didn?t tell the truth.?

?Hmm?? Leaning back, Naliel put his hands on her shoulders. ?What do you mean? About the Attunement?? Naliel held back his smile, because he already had an idea of what she was going to say. He had already seen the signs of her Attunement, but decided to wait for her to approach him first.

A nod. ?Yes.? Briae?s face scrunched up in a small frown. ?But, I don?t understand it. It?s muffled, like muddy water.?

?Oh?? Genuine surprise emerged. ?Muddy water?? A surge of pride filled Naliel at the news and he put a hand on her head. ?Little one, that is a sign you have two Attunements. Extremely rare for someone as young as you. Elves do connect with the other elements, but only with time. Usually, our second and third Attunement arrives around our twenties to thirties. To have two so soon is very promising.?

Eye lighting up, Briae beamed at her father. ?Really? I have two Attunements??

?Yes. It?s very rare, but normally when you can?t quite understand an element, it?s because you?re unable to separate the two sets of spirits communicating with you.? Naliel looked thoughtful. ?If I had to guess, your elements are earth and water. An even more unusual combination. I can train you in earth, but I?ll speak to Tyrnus about possibly taking you on concerning the water aspect.

?Once you learn what to sense and how to separate the two, it?ll become clearer.? Somewhat excited, Naliel kissed her forehead. ?You might even become one of the youngest Elementalists, Briae.? Veciel had been only eighteen winters when he had begun his training; twelve made Briae nothing short of a prodigy. Sarnaiel and Lavern would also be thrilled.

Gasping, Briae?s hands flew to her face. ?R-really? I? me? I mean I? oh Father!? She threw her arms around Naliel and he chuckled. He was pleased to see his little girl happy again.

?Don?t get too excited. You are still very young so I?m not sure if they?ll accept you right away? but I?ll speak to the headmaster about admitting you. When Sarnaiel returns, we?ll tell him. Now then, go tell your grandfather, he will definitely wish to know. We?ll have a nice dinner to celebrate when Sarna returns from his sentry post.?

?Thank you Father! Thank you so much!? Another hug and then Briae pulled back, face flushed and practically glowing with excitement. ?Being an Elementalist, it?s been my dream.?

?Has it?? She nodded and Naliel stood, taking her hand. ?Then I have every belief you will succeed.?

Julianna Home Improvements | Home Improvement Ideas

There are several home improvement ideas that could be implemented to increase the value of your home while making it more beautiful. Putting these ideas into action will make your home more livable, enhancing the comfort you experience daily. More than this though, making use of home improvement ideas to make your home better is a prudent investment.

When the term ?home improvement? is used, the most common mental image people have Do ? It ? Yourself (DIY) package. While home improvement can be DIY, it goes beyond that to professional installations and repairs. Home improvement projects range from a simple paint job to complete remodeling.
There are a number of home improvement projects which over time have become the most commonly undertaken, they are: Kitchen remodeling; Bathroom remodeling and additions; heating system installation; and window replacement among others.

From these, there are countless ideas which you could implement to make your home more comfortable and beautiful.

The kitchen is a nice place to start when considering a home improvement project. Getting your kitchen to have that new and shiny look is a good start. The biggest challenge here would be the kitchen cabinets. To get around this, you could either remodel with new cabinets or reface the ones you already have; this will depend on your budget as remodeling your kitchen cabinets will cost twice as much as refacing the existing cabinets.

Another home improvement idea when working with your kitchen would be to change the kitchen flooring. The kitchen floor can make a world of difference to the overall look of the kitchen. Kitchen flooring comes in different selections these days.

You have a choice of hardwood floors, ceramic and stone tiles. You could also decide to use laminate flooring, which is a pretty new but increasingly popular option.

The bathroom is another prime area of a house when it comes to home improvement. If and when you decide to put your home on the market, the bathroom is one place that could easily put off a potential buyer. So directing some attention that way can only be an advantage, especially as you get to enjoy a more comfortable surrounding as a result.

When it comes to the bathroom, there are several home improvement ideas that could be applied. Here, a change of tiles could just be what your bathroom needs for a more modern look. Adding wainscoting or changing the one that is already there could give the bathroom a more finished look. You might want to change the bathtub or add another one; there are just so many things one could do to give added beauty to a bathroom and make it more upscale.

Changing your windows to sliding windows, picture windows, bay windows or any of the many window styles available can also make a difference to the look of your house.

HBT: Red Sox players go to ownership about Valentine

In news that will surprise absolutely no one, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports has some very juicy details about Red Sox players not loving their time with manager Bobby Valentine.

According to Passan players ?blasted Valentine to owners John Henry and Larry Lucchino during a heated meeting called after a text message was sent by a group of frustrated players to the team and ownership in late July.?

Passan specifically cites Adrian Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia as having spoken up on behalf of teammates upset over Valentine leaving Jon Lester in to allow 11 runs on July 22.

And during a meeting at a New York hotel called by ownership Passan says ?some players stated flatly they no longer wanted to play for Valentine.? That was nearly three weeks ago and obviously nothing has happened since then, at least publicly. In fact, Henry gave Valentine a vote of confidence just last week, saying a change will not be made this season and scoffing at the idea that the manager was to blame for the team?s sub-.500 record.

However, at this point Valentine?s odds of returning in 2013 are very much in question. Passan details a whole bunch of other alleged incidents throughout the season that paint the clubhouse as anything but thrilled with Valentine. General manager Ben Cherington confirmed that the meeting took place, calling it ?productive? and ?a forum for people to express whatever frustration needed to be expressed.?

Boston is 57-59 under Valentine, who hadn?t managed in MLB since 2002 with the Mets and took the job after serving as an ESPN television analyst. And dating back to the second half of last season under Terry Francona the Red Sox are 75-87 in their last 162 games.

For a whole lot more, read Passan?s full report.

Cowboys beat Raiders 3-0 in exhibition opener

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Darren McFadden needed one series to show he's in midseason form for Oakland following a foot injury that cut his last season short.

Most of the rest of the first-team offensive players for the Raiders and Dallas Cowboys need plenty of work to get back to that level.

McFadden picked up where he left off last season by gaining 38 yards on Oakland's first three plays of the exhibition season and the Raiders went on to lose to the Dallas Cowboys 3-0 on Monday night.

"He was able to make some explosive gains," Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. "That's what we anticipate out of him. He's an explosive play-maker. We have to find ways to get him the ball and give him an opportunity to be explosive for us."

McFadden, who missed the last nine games of 2011 with a Lisfranc injury to his right foot, opened the game with a 4-yard run, an 18-yard reception and a 16-yard run to delight of the Raiders fans.

But Carson Palmer threw an interception to Gerald Sensabaugh on the next play for Oakland (tied for No. 23 in the AP Pro32) and both the Raiders and Cowboys (No. 15, AP Pro32) struggled to generate much of anything until the reserves took over in the second half.

"We made some mistakes and it cost us," Dallas quarterback Tony Romo said. "There will be some good stuff to evaluate and get better. We have to get better from tonight's game and we will."

Kyle Orton drove Dallas 67 yards on the opening drive of the second half to set up Dan Bailey's 33-yard field goal and that proved to be the only scoring of the night.

McFadden left after that first series and Palmer couldn't move the Raiders without him. Matt Leinart played the rest of a scoreless first half and completed six passes to undrafted free agent Rod Streater but couldn't put any points on the board.

Dez Bryant, who status was in question after leaving practice early Saturday because of hamstring tightness, came up with the only big play for Dallas' first-team offense when he made a good adjustment in the air for a 24-yard gain from Romo on the first offensive drive for the Cowboys.

That was the only first down in three series with Romo under center. Only two of Dallas' other 10 plays with Romo in the game went for more than 1 yard and both of those were on third-and-longs when the Cowboys couldn't convert.

But the Dallas defense did the job after the fast start by McFadden.

"We just had to settle down," Sensabaugh said. "Once we got settled down and everybody just kept doing their job, there weren't too many big plays coming after that. (Our) guys were able to make plays."

The play was sloppy all around as Dallas twice committed penalties on punts to prolong drives for Oakland and committed another before a botched snap on a field goal try.

The Raiders were unable to make the Cowboys pay for those mistakes as the first drive aided by two fourth-down penalties ended in a punt and usually reliable Sebastian Janikowski was wide right on a 47-yard field goal attempt after the third infraction.

Oakland had its share of mistakes as Chimdi Chekwa let a punt roll to the goal line instead of downing it at the 1 and receiver Jacoby Ford had a rough day all around.

Ford was stopped after a 4-yard return on the opening kickoff, had two passes from Palmer go through his hands, was the target on Palmer's interception and muffed a punt that rolled out of bounds to miss a chance at a return.

Even the replacement officials had their own problems as they spotted one ball outside the hash marks only to have Romo correct them.

The game also marked the first real action as a pro for Terrelle Pryor, the former Ohio State star quarterback who had no official plays as a rookie with Oakland. Pryor missed last preseason because he entered the league late through the supplemental draft and committed a false start penalty before his only play in the regular season.

Pryor completed 8 of 15 passes for 50 yards, was sacked twice and was quick to leave the pocket to scramble, running six times for 21 yards. He put Oakland in position to score but Eddy Carmona missed a 36-yard field goal wide right with 6:44 remaining. Pryor then threw an interception on fourth-and-26 in the final minute to end the game.

"I thought I played bad," Pryor said. "I just could've played a lot better and I will play better. I just played bad today."

NOTES: Cowboys rookie LB Kyle Wilber broke his left thumb. ... Raiders C Stefen Wisniewski left in the first quarter with a calf injury. ... Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden greeted fans in the Black Hole before announcing the game for ESPN. ... New Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie lit the torch to honor late owner Al Davis. ... There was a moment of silence before the game for former Raiders DL Ben Davidson, who died last month at age 72.

If you want to save money and enjoy some of the benefits of drinking water, our personal finance expert has a simple suggestion. Drink the daily recommended number of glasses, while also replacing half of your other beverages with the free, healthful alternative.?

In this photo taken in July of 2016, a customer stirs a cup of coffee in the cafe Landtmann in Vienna, Austria. In Vienna's legendary coffee-house tradition, a free glass of tap water with your coffee has been a cherished part of everyday life. Drinking more tap water in the home is both healthy, and financially sound.

Water from your tap is perhaps the best bargain out there for your diet, your health, and your wallet.

For the volume of water that a typical person drinks, it?s practically free. It?s free of calories and has almost no health-damaging additives. Your tap is probably the biggest bargain in your house.

A big glass of water can achieve a lot of things for you for almost no cost.

It can encourage weight loss by filling you up before a meal as well as by replacing beverages that would add calories to your diet.

It can keep you from being dehydrated, which can improve your energy level and also help with heart health (as dehydration is very hard on the human heart). Dehydration also makes exercise much more difficult.

It can cure headaches like nothing else. A glass of water is my first response to any headaches I might have.

It can help with digestive problems, which can be caused by drinking too many acidic beverages. Water is neutral, and your body is designed for it.

How much water should you drink each day? The Institute of Medicine suggests that an adequate intake for men is roughly three liters (13 cups) of total beverages per day, with women aiming for 2.2 liters (or 9 cups) per day.

Notice that?s total fluid intake. Most Americans take in less fluid than that, and much of that intake is in forms other than water.

If you want to save money and enjoy some of the benefits of drinking water, I suggest striving for the adequate daily intake of water for your gender while also replacing half of your other beverages with water.

So, let?s say you?re a guy who currently drinks eight cups of other beverages a day ? coffee, alcoholic beverages, and so forth. Those eight cups are pretty expensive when compared to water; you?re probably paying $0.50 per cup at least, which adds up to $4 per day for beverages.

Change things up. Move to drinking nine cups of water per day and four cups of whatever beverage you choose. Doing that moves you up to the daily recommended water intake, provides most of the benefits described above, and also saves you $2 a day in beverage costs.

Water is an incredible bargain. Take advantage of it.

Round 17 Football Review - Hatherleigh Sports & Recreation

Versus Nangwarry

?We traveled to Nangwarry last weekend and all of our football teams had strong wins against the Saints.

?The Under 11?s kicked the day off bright and early and while we had to lend a few our boys to the Saints to make up the teams, we still had a really good game, with plenty of skill and endeavor on show. It was the last game for several of our boys, who will move up to Junior Colts next season. These boys ? Max Telfer, Loius Brown, Riley Chester, Spencer Jones, Doug Treloar, Jacob Lang and Will Chay ? have played great footy this year and really looked after the little guys on the team. The future of the Eagles looks great with these boys coming through the ranks! That was our last game of U11s for the year, so I would like to thank all the parents who have helped goal umpire, time and cheer us on!

?The Junior Colts beat the Saints by 24 points, with Mitch Pulmer and Alex Buhlmann kicking two goals each and Harry Coote, Jack Gray and Alex Spher each scoring one goal. Awards: Lachie Lang (President?s), Alex Buhlmann (Pete Walters), Jack Gray (G. Nilsson), (HFC Ladies Committee) and Harry Coote (HSRC Steak).

?The Senior Colts also won easily, thrashing Nangwarry by 74 points. Jed Telfer booted four goals and Joseph Brooks, Sam Telfer, Sam Sutherland, Fergus Slape, Tom Jackman-Tilley, Mitch Pulmer and Tom Chant each kicked one goal. Awards: Angus Altschwager (Seebohm?s Sportspower), Fergus Slape (C. Gilbertson), Ben Leopold (G. Nilsson), Joseph Brooks (HFC Ladies Committee) and Lewis Walker (HSRC Steak).

In their second to last game of the year, the Reserves let Nangwarry kick the first three goals, but once we started playing like we should, we came away with an easy win. Dan Sutherland helped us out after playing senior colts and was named best on ground. Matt Bowman played well?at centre half back and Brownie kicked six goals and has now won the league goal-kicking award. Awards: Daniel Sutherland (K&S Ampol), Matt Bowman (Dave Reilly?s Panel & Paint), Shane Lambert (Beachport Hotel), and Josh Clarke (Prince of Wales Hotel).

If we play to our potential against Port MacDonnell we will hopefully finish the year with a win. Thank you to our sponsors and supporters for your help throughout the year.

Like the Reserves, the A Grade started off slowly against the Saints and let them get the first few goals on the board. We soon sorted ourselves out though and ended up winning easily by 86 points. Brett Sneath and Jack Skeer both had a great day in front of goals, each kicking five, while Tylah Saunders kicked four goals.??Awards: Todd Watson (Millicent Golf), Mat Faulkner (Somerset Hotel), Tylah Saunders (Beachport Hotel) and Cameron Slape (Prince of Wales Hotel).

Silver Considering Coney Island, Willets Point As Casino Destinations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? A powerful New York lawmaker could be placing his bets on a Coney Island casino.

State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is reportedly considering the historic site for a betting place.

The idea has the backing of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

WCBS 880?s Peter Haskell reports

Willets Point in Queens is also being eyed as a possible casino destination.

Silver reportedly prefers the locations in Queens and Brooklyn over a location in Manhattan, like the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg insisted Monday that he?s never been a fan of gambling.

?I think history shows that wherever casinos are built the local communities, in spite of all the talk, very seldom benefit,? Bloomberg said.

The Daily News reported Bloomberg was leaning toward Willets Point over Coney Island as a gambling site but the mayor shot down the report.

?As God as my witness, I?ve never heard anybody ever suggest either one, and nobody?s certainly asked me,? Bloomberg said.

The mayor has said he understands the need to find new revenues, but isn?t convinced gambling is the answer.

However, if gambling is legalized, he?d certainly like the city to share in the revenues.

?If we?re going to have it, I think New York City should have it, and we should be able to get revenue for our needs, here,? Bloomberg said.

WCBS 880?s Alex Silverman reports

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature took the first step earlier this year on getting a constitutional amendment to bring legalized casino gambling to New York.

The details are still being worked out but a public referendum in November 2013 will let the people have their say on whether New York should have full casino gambling.

New York could get as many as seven casinos if the plan goes through.

Would you like to get a casino in your neighborhood? Sound off below?
