Family Home and Life: Day from my life #19130, give or take 24 hrs

I'm having one of those weeks, you know where you have to change your schedule multiple times daily? Today it changed three times before 8 am. So, I pulled out something I wrote last summer and forgot about?to give you today since I clearly don't have time for something fresh. It was almost exactly a year ago to the day that all this happened. Enjoy!
??????????
I have recorded what?a day can be like for me, this day was extreme, but days like this can come at anytime and do. (You can read about the first part of the day with the kids first if you want; below is what followed when they all left and I am home alone.)

I turned on the TV to watch the?news and started cleaning up all the toys; I didn?t stop until it?s all put away before I head to the shower. I am wore out from this busy day.

8:30pm: I am giving myself an overdue pedicure when I realize the wind seems to be picking up speed quickly. (This proved to be a unprecedented storm July 5, 2011)

It has started to rain?and it is blowing sideways! I feel a little frightened because I don?t remember when I have ever heard the wind that loud before. Something slams into the back of the house; then the power goes out! Ok, no need for panic, just find the flash light and some candles and matches.... which are not where they are suppose to be. I use my cell phone as a flash light, calm down and remember where to find things. I send out text messages to all my kids to see if everyone is safe. I don't want to make calls and run my battery down.

One daughter in law calls to say she was driving on the freeway with the baby when the storm hit her, but she is ok now and her phone is going dead. I ask her to please let me know when she makes it home safe, which is 30 miles away and the storm is intense. Everyone has checked in except one daughter.

I?m getting worried about scorpions that come out after dark here?and are sometimes chased into the house by rain.?I've had one climb up my leg before so I sit in my chair with my feet up off the floor in the candle light. After about an hour, the wind is calming down and the rain has slowed to a sprinkle. I go outside to see if anyone has power on our street. It feels nice outside; it?s getting really hot inside. I?m so tired I just want to go to bed so back inside?I lay down in the heat of?my bedroom?and listened to the quiet.

I wish I could talk?with my husband but he is unavailable at work. I thought of all the things I had not done yet on my list for the day. The kitchen cleaned up, the vacuuming, Face Book and emails that weren?t checked. Did I get the mail? I thought about the happy times of the day, the babies and precious grand kids I?ve been blessed with. The first day of school for one grandchild, the first day of a new job for my daughter, the sister of my daughter in law lying in a hospital bed sedated because of the intense pain.

I can?t seem to quiet my mind and I realize I have been too busy for too long; I need a break, not for a few minutes or hours, for a few days. I think about how much it would cost to get away and can we manage it right now. I think again about how quiet it is and how I?ve grown use to the noise of my life, and I?m not sure what to do when I am without all the noise.

My phone receives a text message; a call now would drain my battery completely. Daughter #3 telling me that daughter #2 who had not yet checked in had come home to find their house had been broke into and robbed! The police say it looks like a planned robbery, even took 2 yr olds piggy bank. The house was trashed, lots of valuables taken. ?But is everyone ok?? I quickly text back. I start thinking what this means to them, what they have lost. "Everyone is ok" the message comes back. I text other family members what has happened and wait for replies.

It?s 10pm. When is this day going to be over??Suddenly the power comes back on, so I get up and decide to wait up for my husband to get home from his second job, about 11:30. How could I sleep now? I decide to get on the computer while listening to the news on TV to see what happened during the storm. My short lived time out, my moment of silence, was over.

Next morning, I have forgotten about the silence. I am back in the groove,?although I am over tired. I send a text message to see how the sister in the hospital is this am; I post an update about it for family on Face Book. I discuss the robbery of daughter #2 with the man of my house. I know that yesterdays events will soon be forgotton and life will once again become routine.

But just now, I feel that silence is whispering to me, ?come back, we need to talk. You need to spend time with Me if you are to be what I intended for you to be.? I pause?...yes, that?s true?? but then I see those pots and pans still waiting on the stove for me to wash them. Later, I?ll wash and clean up and then I?ll rest and be quiet, later??.

Longest-lived Mars orbiter is back in service

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter has resumed its science observations and its role as a Mars rover's relay, thanks to a spare part that had been waiting 11 years to be put to use.

Odyssey's flight team returned the orbiter to full service this week after a careful two-week sequence of activities to recover from a fault that put Odyssey into reduced-activity "safe" mode. Odyssey switched to safe mode when one of the three primary reaction wheels used for attitude control stuck for a few minutes on June 8, Universal Time (June 7, Pacific Time).

Engineers assessed the sticking wheel as unreliable and switched the spacecraft from that one to a spare that had been unused since before the mission's April 7, 2001, launch.

"Odyssey is now back in full, nominal operation mode using the replacement wheel," said Steve Sanders, lead engineer for the Odyssey team at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver. Lockheed Martin collaborates with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., in operation of Odyssey, which has worked at Mars longer than any other Mars mission in history.

Observations of Mars resumed June 25 with Odyssey's Thermal Emission Imaging System and its Gamma Ray Spectrometer. As a relay, Odyssey received data from NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity June 27 and transmitted the data to Earth. Other priority activities include preparing Odyssey to serve as a communications relay for NASA Mars Science Laboratory mission.

Odyssey uses a set of three reaction wheels to control its attitude, or which way it is facing relative to the sun, Earth or Mars. Increasing the rotation rate of a reaction wheel causes the spacecraft itself to rotate in the opposite direction. The configuration in use from launch until this month combined the effects of three wheels at right angles to each other to provide control in all directions. The replacement wheel is skewed at angles to all three others so that it can be used as a substitute for any one of them. Odyssey can also use thrusters for attitude control, though that method draws on the limited supply of propellant rather than on electricity from the spacecraft's solar array.

Odyssey is managed for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington by JPL, a division the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft. For more about the Mars Odyssey mission, visit: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey .

Prince Charles applauds Federer's win at Wimbledon

(AP) ? Roger Federer gave Prince Charles a bow, then gave Fabio Fognini a royal thumping.

With the Prince of Wales visiting Wimbledon for the first time since 1970, Federer was at his best Wednesday and beat Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Six-time champion Federer won 37 of 41 points on his first serve, and won 21 of 23 points at the net against Fognini, an Italian ranked 68th.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall sat in the first row of the Royal Box as Federer walked onto Centre Court for the day's first match. Federer and Fognini stood side by side as they bowed awkwardly toward the royals, and Charles responded with a wave and grin.

"They do brief you beforehand," Federer said. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do. We're thrilled for the tennis family that they came to watch Wimbledon today."

When Federer completed his victory, Charles and Camilla joined the crowd's applause.

Seeded third, Federer hopes to end his 2?-year drought in major tournaments, and he's off to a good start, losing only nine games through two rounds. He seeks to add to his record total of 16 Grand Slam championships, and he could match the record of seven Wimbledon men's titles set by William Renshaw in the 1880s and tied by Pete Sampras in 2000.

"I'm just happy overall with how I'm playing," Federer said. "I'm serving well when I have to. I'm moving well. I feel like my forehand and backhand are working well. All of a sudden you win quite comfortably, but you have to focus until the very last point, and I'm happy as well with my concentration level."

Sloane Stephens, a 19-year-old American playing at Wimbledon for the first time, saved five set points in the first set and beat No. 23 Petra Cetkovska 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. Heather Watson became the first British woman to reach the third round since 2002 when she defeated American Jamie Hampton 6-1, 6-4.

Sara Errani needed only seven seconds to complete a rain-interrupted win, and she didn't even have to hit a ball.

Errani led American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 5-3 and held the advantage one point from victory when their match was halted Tuesday evening. They returned to Court 16 some 18 hours later, and when Vandeweghe double-faulted into the net on the first point, Errani had the win.

No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic required only one game to complete a rain-interrupted first-round win over Santiago Giraldo, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. No. 7 David Ferrer reached the second round by beating Dustin Brown 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur was upset by 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Stosur, who was seeded fifth, fell to 6-10 at Wimbledon.

No. 13 Dominika Cibulkova lost to Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 6-1. Former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

American Mardy Fish said he declined interviews after his first-round victory because of a stomach problem related to pain medication he's taking for his right arm ? and not related to his heart. He expects to be ready for his second-round match Thursday.

Fish spoke to reporters Wednesday, a day after he beat Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo in straight sets. It was the first match for Fish since a medical procedure in May to try to pinpoint an accelerated heartbeat.

Federer took only 23 minutes to win the first set and continued to pull away. The inconsistent Fognini fell to 1-16 against top 10 players but did manage some spectacular shots, and the players shared smiles after several improbable points that had the crowd roaring.

There was a brief moment of drama when Federer slipped behind the baseline after hitting a forehand. His legs splayed and his left knee landed hard on the grass.

"I'm fine," he said. "No pain, which is good. It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."

Brave | Arts & Entertainment | South Philly Review

Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) in Pixar?s ?Brave? shows girls that they can shoot a bow and arrow, too.

It may be clearer than ever that Pixar?s golden era went out with ?Toy Story 3,? the jewel in the crown of an animation studio that ruled over its medium for 15 glorious years. But does ?Brave,? Pixar?s new badass-Scottish-lass adventure, deserve to be flogged simply because it?s not ?WALL?E?-level transcendent? Yes and no. Solid yet innocuous, moving yet minimally ambitious, this old-fashioned fantasy is an oxymoronic specimen, aiming for progressiveness while clinging to safe traditions. But it nevertheless offers something rarely seen in the world of toons: A mother-daughter tale that leaves the boys on the side.

Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is your typical oppressed tomboy princess, a nervy athlete who?d rather fire arrows than follow the rules of her mother (voiced by Emma Thompson), a stern queen trying to marry Merida off. Before you can say ?Mulan,? our free-thinking heroine is pulling an Ariel, consulting a shady witch to ?change her fate.? What results is as zanily random as it is intentionally gender-subverting, and when not inducing yawns with lazy plot offshoots (the male characters simply holler and spar), the combo yields tender common ground for its feuding kinswomen.

Directed by Pixar?s Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, ?Brave? follows Disney?s ?Tangled? as a film in which hair proves a benchmark in animation?s evolution (Merida?s springy, scarlet locks are wondrous to behold). But, more importantly, the movie boasts Pixar?s first female lead, a separate benchmark many will view as a blown opportunity.

Andrews and Chapman may pilot their film to an affecting resolution, but their introductory scene of Merida triumphantly scaling a mountain (one of many moments with misty vistas), is hardly a promise that?s kept. ?Brave? is an atmospheric jaunt with quirky flourishes, but its bound to leave the gals in the audience feeling a bit shortchanged. Whereas, say, ?Up? presented a man with startling human complexity, Pixar?s unwittingly regressive 13th feature keeps things light and unchallenging, all while quietly waving a flag of feminism. Instead of passing women the ball, it merely throws them a bone.

Willem Dafoe fans shouldn?t miss the eco-drama ?The Hunter,? which sees the chameleonic actor take the lead as a sharp-shooting mercenary, tasked to hunt down an endangered animal in Tasmania. Shot on location, the film is predominantly picturesque, and it ably blends environmental themes with taut conflict. Its scattered missteps are overshadowed by Dafoe, who gives a soulful performance as the noirish antihero.

What Many People Won't Tell You Regarding Social Media | Go ...

Captivating an audience has always been a trivial problem for business owners in the online world. There are countless ways to reach your target, but they each have their own hassles and investments required. Social media marketing finally provides a way for new or old companies to touch on a huge population via interesting and entertaining marketing options. This article will help you establish some of the important ideas and routines needed to accomplish that goal.

Don?t offer the consumer a plethora of options to take once they follow your info to your site. They should land on a well designed page that directs them to only one possibility. With increased options, they are more likely to become unsettled or overwhelmed, and leave. Take it slow and guide them without their full knowledge of your input.

If social media marketing is new to you, here is a tip to help you understand it better. Think of the social media sites as places in which you can create a picture and a voice for your business. Your posts represent the viewpoint of your company. Consider social media as the way to communicate who you are, what your product is and what value your product has for potential customers.

Remember that when you are using social media to market your business, you are communicating with people, not at them. The technology that people are using now and the way social media is designed is allowing your customers to communicate easier than ever before. You have to engage in this conversation and communicate with your customers in contrast to posting ad copy with a one-sided point of view.

If you are using your social media to advertise an existing business, especially one that is based online, make sure you include the link to your website. It is astonishing how many people don?t include a link to their own site. Getting those who find you to click over to your site is a great way to introduce them to all you have to offer.

You want to create an individual style on your social media profiles, but don?t become too engulfed in one that you neglect the rest. It is important to have a presence across the entire web, as compared to only a really strong base at one end or the other. Give each profile the time of day and utilize what makes them unique. This will drive in traffic from many more sources and refrain from drying up as quickly.

Your headline is crucial to a good post. Most social networks encourage you to keep your posts short, and if you were to post a long article, chances are no one would take the time to read it. Try posting a link to your article with a good headline that both grabs your readers? attention and explain what the article is about.

Use Facebook to run a special promotion or a competition. Everyone loves winning something, so your followers are sure to get involved. Whether you offer a free product, a special high-amount coupon or a big or small prize, it will get people more actively involved with your Facebook page. It also builds goodwill with your customer base.

If you are not sure what you should write about, create a poll. Your followers or friends can choose between several choices related to your industry, or they can add more suggestions by commenting on the polls. You could use these results and suggestions to post new, interesting content in the weeks following the poll.

Your marketing plan no longer has to consist of only boring articles or slow ads on the side of a page. Entertaining media can now be used to reach a huge audience in little time at all. The responsibility still falls on the business owner to supply great products or services, but with the tips offered above you can combine these elements into a magnificent company.

Five Best Real Estate Markets For 2012-2017

The U.S. continues to struggle out of a slumping housing market and foreclosures continue to loom, but some analysts who are looking on the brighter side forecast investment opportunities will grow in some areas. The top five cities expected to see substantial market growth in the next five years includes, from least to best, according to HousingPredictor.com: Medford, Oregon; Seattle; Lost Altos, California; San Francisco; and Miami. The researcher looked at factors like job prospects and future projected economic conditions to pinpoint expected property appreciation, which helps explains how foreclosure-ridden Miami tops the list. For more on this continue reading the following article from TheStreet.

Market watcher HousingPredictor.com thinks U.S. home prices could keep falling across much of America for years -- but believes a handful of markets offer great investment opportunities right now.

"When most people figure out that this really is a great time to buy in some areas of the country, it will be too late to make a really good profit," HousingPredictor.com's Mike Colpitts says. "In some areas, it is a great time to jump back into the market -- but you have to be very careful [given] all the concerns about the overall economy."

The firm recently analyzed 230 cities' housing and economic conditions and found about a dozen it expects will produce double-digit price gains over the next five years.

"These are places that have better job prospects and stronger economic conditions than most other areas," Colpitts says.

For instance, HousingPredictor.com expects upscale Los Altos, Calif., to see prices rise 15.5% over the next five years as staffers from nearby Facebook use gains from the company's recent initial public offering to buy homes.

Here's a look at the five U.S. markets HousingPredictor.com thinks will offer the best average price appreciation over the next five years.

Listing information comes from Realtor.com, the National Association of Realtors' official property-listing site, and excludes mobile homes, parcels under agreement and houses still under construction.?

    Fifth-best market: Medford, Ore.
    Expected five-year price gain:13.9%

This metro area of some 200,000 people just north of the California border in south-central Oregon has had high unemployment in recent years, but Colpitts sees an improvement coming.

"Medford has grown a lot over the past decade and has more employers these days," he says. "More jobs translate to more home purchasers."

Historically a farming area, Medford has become a regional hub for medical care, as well as a destination for more and more retirees.

The city also hosts the New York Stock Exchange-listed Lithia Motors chain of car dealerships, the famous Harry & David food company (parent of the Fruit-of-the-Month Club) and a few other important employers.

As for housing, Realtor.com lists some 350 Medford properties for sale, priced from $33,000 for a two-bedroom condo to $2.3 million for a four-bedroom home on 166 acres.?

    Fourth-best market: Seattle
    Expected five-year price gain:14.9%

"Seattle has weathered the housing downturn better than the majority of the nation, despite a sizable decline in home values," Colpitts says.

He adds that the Emerald City's stable of large, well-paying tech firms -- from Amazon to Microsoft -- bodes well for real estate prices in the 3.4-million person metro area.

"Higher salaries paid to workers should bolster the housing market," the expert says.

Realtor.com lists roughly 1,800 Seattle homes for sale, from a $60,000 two-bedroom condo to an $18 million waterfront estate.?

    Third-best market: Los Altos, Calif.
    Expected five-year price gain:15.5%

This affluent community of 28,000 people is in the heart of Silicon Valley, just up the road from Apple and other high-tech firms.

In fact, Los Altos' current or former residents have included late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang and other tech titans.

Colpitts said that group should drive Los Altos' home prices higher and higher over the next five years.

"More millionaires are busting out [in Silicon Valley] than anywhere else in the United States -- and the majority of buyers are paying cash for homes," he says.

If you're looking to move to Los Altos, there are 135 properties listed for sale there on Realtor.com. Prices range from $340,000 for a one-bedroom condo to $13 million for a 4-acre estate.?

    Second-best market: San Francisco
    Expected five-year price gain: 15.9%

Sometimes called the "Wall Street of the West," San Francisco's large financial sector, seven Fortune 500 companies and thriving tech industry underpin the 7.6-million-person metro area's economy and housing market.

Large employers that call San Francisco home range from Wells Fargo to Craigslist. The 25,000-student San Francisco State University also adds to local housing demand that Colpitts expects will increase in the next few years.

"A rich, diverse cultural mix of people has transformed the greater Bay Area into a world-class city to make home," he says.

Realtor.com has some 1,800 San Francisco homes for sale, from a $99,000 fire-damaged teardown to a $38 million eight-bedroom estate.?

    No. 1 best market: Miami
    Expected five-year price gain: 18.7%

Long the poster child for South Florida's housing bust and foreclosure crisis, Miami gets the top spot in HousingPredictor.com's study because the 2.5 million-population metro area's real estate market has finally begun to turn around.

Media list prices already rose 15.5% over the past year on Realtor.com, and Colpitts thinks the recovery has just begun -- fueled partly by investors from Latin America and other foreign locales.

"Miami is an international designation for vacationers and has become a world-class resort community, attracting home and condo purchasers from all over the world," he says. "If there's ever been a time to buy housing in Miami in this decade, chances are this is it."

Property buyers will find some 12,000 Miami homes listed on Realtor.com. Prices start at $12,600 for a one-bedroom condo and run to $125 million for an 11-bedroom oceanfront estate.
