Heart to Heart at Home: Family Fun

Let The Good Times Roll
"Since I am a busy mom of four, I rely on my children to help me out with everyday chores around the house. One morning I was running around trying to get the children and myself ready, when I suddenly realized it was trash pickup day. So I handed a bag of garbage to my sleepy seven-year-old son and told him to toss it in the trash bin on his way out the door.Glancing out my window moments later, I saw him wearily boarding the bus. He was carrying his backpack, his lunchbox and a big white bag of garbage."?

Family life can be very entertaining. Although in the moment we may feel a lot of pressure, stress or great concern over what's happening, when we look back at the circumstances we can often laugh. I have to be grateful to my husband for frequently pointing out to me that, "someday we'll laugh about this", even in a crisis when I thought I would ring his neck for saying that.

Do you have any funny stories you would like to share? Please feel free to leave your comments below.

Justin Bieber vs. Joustin' Beaver: Who Will Win?

It is totally on between Justin Bieber and an animated beaver.

Two weeks after attorneys for the singer sent a cease-and-desist letter to RC3, the makers of a video game titled "Joustin Beaver," that company has fired back, alleging that its creation does NOT violate Bieber's trademark claims.

J. Biebs PhotoJoutsin Bieber

"The App, a video game, is a parody of the commercial success of the Defendant and any celebrity," RC3 states in its lawsuit, going on to detail the game, which hilariously included "Otter-graphs."

By admitting the game is a reflection on Justin's celebrity lifestyle, the company is aiming to convince a judge it possesses a First Amendment right to use the teen pop star's intellectual property. It's all a bit confusing, we know. Even more so for girls who got excited when they saw "Justin Bieber" and "Beaver" in this headline.

We didn't mean to mislead.

Unsolicited Advice is Rarely Appreciated | Business Networking | Dr ...

I recently received an unsolicited e-mail message from a man named Chris.? The message stated:

I watched the ?video for International Networking Week and? I found it personally offensive and amateurish.? I just thought you would like some feedback.? Consider that when you make your presentation on the Today Show [next week].?

OK, so I should begin by saying ? I don?t know Chris.? I?ve never met him and have never talked to him.? Why he would feel compelled to send me such a ?pleasant? communication, I can?t fathom.

However, I am thankful to Chris.? I?m thankful because his e-mail message gives me an opportunity to talk a little bit about relationship networking.

Every time you communicate with someone (especially the first time) it is a chance to construct or deconstruct a relationship. This is the first time I?ve ever heard from Chris.? I?d have to say that ?first contact? wasn?t very constructive.

I?m not sure what possesses people to send unsolicited criticism to someone they don?t know.? But it seems to be happening more and more in this digital world.? I can?t imagine that Chris would have the chutzpa to say this to someone if he were face-to-face with them.? However, the digital world is ripe with cyber critics who can say what they want and feel more removed from the situation via the internet (it?s possible that being outside striking distance may have something to do with that).

I went back and looked at the ?offending? video.? Since Chris didn?t specify what ?offended? him, I have no idea what was said that was so offensive to him.? As for ?amateurish,? well, I understand that opinions are like noses, everyone has one (that?s the G-Rated version of this saying).? Despite knowing the opinion thing, I thought I should look at the video again closely.? It was shot by a professional videographer.? It had multiple camera angles, professional lighting, and even makeup (maybe that was offensive to Chris?).? I?ve had people say that this video was a bit ?artsy? with the cutaways being a little distracting.? Some people didn?t like the switching between black & white and color.? At least those comments were specific and constructive.?? But, amateurish ? really?? I thought maybe this guy had some amazing website that would put my video to shame so I checked it out.? Ahh, rather than go to the dark side, let?s just say I wouldn?t refer him based on his website.

Here?s the bottom line:? if you want to succeed in life, make your own business better and be sparing in the way you criticize others.

I know, I know, some people just can?t help themselves.? So, if you just can?t hold back and you feel compelled to vent on some other poor unsuspecting soul, consider these four things before you press ?send? on your nasty-gram:

  1. Is your criticism unsolicited?? Unsolicited advice (especially from people you don?t know ? is rarely appreciated).
  2. Do you know the person to whom you?re sending the criticism?? If not, why are you really sending it (other than to get something off YOUR chest and put it onto their shoulders)?
  3. Whether you know them or not ? is your intention to give ?constructive? suggestions (otherwise known as meaningful, specific, positive ideas) or just to vent?? If it?s to vent ? tell a friend who loves you instead and leave the person you don?t know alone.
  4. If you send this communication ? will it help construct a relationship or deconstruct a relationship?? If it?s the latter ? remember Mom?s advice: if you don?t have anything good to say, say nothing at all!

No one has ever built a statue to a critic.? It?s easy to tell other people what they are doing wrong.? It?s hard to do the right thing yourself.

Have you ever?had this type of experience?? If so, what did you do?? What would you add to my list above?? I?d love to hear your thoughts on this matter.

City tightens?grip on EPL lead

updated 7:08 p.m. ET Feb. 25, 2012

LONDON - Manchester City tightened its grip on top spot in the English Premier League on Saturday by registering a 13th straight home victory, easing past Blackburn 3-0.

City barely broke into a sweat at fortress Etihad Stadium to move provisionally five points clear of Manchester United, with Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko scoring in a routine victory.

United States defender Tim Ream made his league debut for Bolton at Chelsea but couldn't stop the home side as England midfielder Frank Lampard scored one goal and set up another in a 3-0 win. That ended Chelsea's miserable run of five straight winless games to move past Arsenal and provisional fourth place.

Arsenal hosts third-place Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday, when United visits Norwich.

City's solid home form is allowing it to challenge for its first English title since 1968. Not since Newcastle in 1996 has a team won as many successive home league games from the start of a season.

"People say being leader you have the pressure from those behind, but I think it is the opposite," City captain Vincent Kompany said.

At the end of a week in which Carlos Tevez returned to training with City after three months of unauthorized leave, his rival strikers all scored and proved the Argentina international will have to earn his starting place.

Balotelli opened the scoring after 30 minutes before Aguero in the 52nd and Dzeko in the 81st added further goals against Blackburn, which is third from bottom.

"We seem to have found our form again," Kompany said. "There's no such thing as an easy game and for us to win the league we've got to do the same, week in week out."

Lampard completed Chelsea's easy win with a late volley to become the first player to score at least 10 Premier League goals in nine successive seasons. It was also the 150th league goal of his career.

Brazil center back David Luiz and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, who went off injured late on, earlier scored after a goalless first half.

"It was important to win after all the recent disappointments," said manager Andre Villas-Boas, whose job may have been untenable had Chelsea lost to a team second from last. "We have been trying so hard and today we managed to do a great, great game."

Terry Connor's first match in temporary charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers started disastrously with Papiss Demba Cisse and Jonas Gutierrez putting Newcastle 2-0 ahead after 18 minutes of their match at St. James' Park.

However, Matt Jarvis reduced Wolves' deficit at the start of the second half and Kevin Doyle snatched the equalizer in the 66th, denting sixth-place Newcastle's hopes of a finish in the Champions League spots and lifting the Wolves out of the bottom three.

Queens Park Rangers slipped to fourth from last after losing 1-0 at home to Clint Dempsey's Fulham, West Bromwich Albion beat Sunderland 4-0 and Wigan drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Malaga gave up an early goal, then rallied past last-place Zaragoza 5-1 to move within one point of fourth-place Levante for the Spanish league's final Champions League berth next season.

Levante, an early season sensation, won 2-1 at Espanyol for its first victory of 2012, getting a go-ahead goal on Ruben Suarez's late free kick in the 88th minute.

Carlos Aranda's volley put Zaragoza ahead in the 23rd minute, but Seba Fernandez tied it in the 45th and Malaga went ahead in the 67th when Francisco "Isco" Alarcon's cross deflected in off Paulo Da Silva.

In Barcelona, Valmiro "Valdo" Lopes put visiting Levante ahead in the 24th, but substitute Kalu Uche tied it in the 75th. Suarez's free kick grazed a defender before bending around goalkeeper Kiko Casilla to give Levante its first win in nine weeks.

Elsewhere, Racing Santander came from behind for a 1-1 home draw against Sporting Gijon in a relegation fight, while Getafe drew 1-1 at Real Betis after Jose Dorado's own goal canceled out Jorge Molina's opener for Betis.

___

MILAN (AP) ? Alessandro Matri scored in the 83rd minute, and Juventus extended its unbeaten streak to 28 games with a 1-1 tie at Serie A leader AC Milan on Saturday in a match between the league's top two teams.

Defending champion AC Milan has 51 points, one more than Juventus, which has played one less game.

AC Milan went ahead in the 14th minute, when Leonardo Bonucci's failed clearance led to Antonio Nocerino's goal on a 30-yard shot that deflected off a defender and past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Matri, who entered in the 70th, tied it when he volleyed in Simone Pepe's cross.

In the day's other game, Rodrigo Palacio scored his second goal deep into stoppage time to give Genoa a 2-2 draw against Parma.

___

BERLIN (AP) ? Not even the eagerly anticipated return of Lukas Podolski could stop Cologne slumping to a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga's Rhine derby on Saturday.

Cologne fans had their hopes pinned on the striker who scored half of their side's league goals this season, but Podolski was unable to exert his usual influence after four weeks out injured.

Instead, Germany teammate Lars Bender scored twice for Leverkusen to leave Cologne two points off the relegation places after six defeats in seven games.

"These are hard times for us," Cologne coach Stale Solbakken said after his side's third straight defeat.

Bender opened the scoring from close range in the 16th minute, making sure Vedran Corluka's goalward header crossed the line after Stefan Reinartz's initial header hit the post. The Leverkusen midfielder coolly tucked the ball beyond Michael Rensing in the 51st, thanks to an outstanding pass from Renato Augusto.

Nuremberg stunned Werder Bremen in the late game when Alexander Esswein scored for the visitors to win 1-0 and move away from the relegation zone.

Bremen's Claudio Pizarro was agonizingly wide before the break, and the Peru striker went even closer after it when he struck the post after rounding the goalkeeper.

Pizarro set up Marko Marin in the 61st, only for Marin to scoop the ball over from close range.

"Unfortunately we didn't take our chances. Sometimes the ball doesn't want to go in, and this season we've hit the post pretty often," Pizarro said.

Nuremberg scored against the run of play in the 65th, when Jens Hegeler crossed for the unmarked Esswein to drill a shot to the far corner.

Coach Otto Rehhagel's long-awaited return to the Bundesliga could not prevent Hertha Berlin slumping to its sixth successive defeat, its seventh in all competitions.

Augsburg beat the 73-year-old coach's side 3-0 in his first game in charge to move above the visitors and leave Hertha in the relegation playoff place.

"Augsburg fought like lions," Rehhagel said. "Everyone has to understand that we're in a relegation battle. It's obvious that we can't play like Barcelona."

Elsewhere, Stuttgart beat bottom side Freiburg 4-1 in a local derby, Mainz routed Kaiserslautern 4-0 and Hoffenheim won 2-1 at Wolfsburg.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic recorded its 14th straight victory in the Scottish Premier League by beating Motherwell 1-0 on Saturday to maintain its remorseless march to the title.

Gary Hooper scored the winner in the 59th minute to extend the leaders' cushion over Glasgow rival and defending champion Rangers to 23 points.

Rangers, which visits Inverness on Sunday in one of its two games in hand, virtually relinquished its title after being docked 10 points for going into administration ? a form of bankruptcy protection ? last week.

Third-place Motherwell could have drawn level on points with Rangers but hardly troubled Celtic, ending its six-game unbeaten run.

Dunfermline is three points adrift at the bottom after losing 3-1 at fourth-place St. Johnstone.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Montpellier moved into the French league lead with a 1-0 victory over visiting Bordeaux on John Utaka's header off a corner kick in the 80th minute.

Paris Saint-Germain dropped into second place with a 4-4 draw at Lyon.

Guillaume Hoarau put the visitors ahead in the 21st, but goals by Bafetimbi Gomis in the 34th, Lisandro Lopez in the 36th and Michel Bastos in the 40th put Lyon ahead 3-1. Nene's penalty kick in the 45th trimmed the deficit, but Jimmy Briand's header off a corner kick in the 57th made it 4-2. Goals by substitute Marcos Ceara in the 73rd and Hoarau in stoppage time gained the draw.

Also Saturday, it was: Auxerre 0, Saint-Etienne 0; Valenciennes 2, Lorient 0; Nice 1, Caen 0; Ajaccio 2, Dijon 1; and Evian 2, Nancy 0.

(AP) ? Arkansas had learned a few things about not giving up thanks to its first game against Tennessee this season.

Those lessons paid off as the Lady Razorbacks pulled out a 72-71 win against the 10th-ranked Lady Vols in overtime, handing them a program-worst third home loss for the season. Tennessee had beaten Arkansas 69-38 on Jan. 8 in Fayetteville.

"These kids came in here believing that they could win this game despite the fact that we got beat badly by Tennessee," Arkansas coach Tom Collen said. "The further along we went in the game, the more they believed. They just made a lot of great plays down the stretch to finish it off."

The Lady Razorbacks snapped an 18-game losing skid to Tennessee and became the second Southeastern Conference team this season to win in Knoxville, a place where the Lady Vols previously had not lost a conference game for nearly four years. South Carolina got its first win in Knoxville on Feb. 2.

For Tennessee, it was the third loss at home this season ? the most the program has ever had in a season. The Lady Vols also lost to No. 1 Baylor on Nov. 27.

Shekinna Stricklen hit a layup for Tennessee with 48 seconds left to play to cut Arkansas' lead to 70-69. The Lady Vols got the ball back when Keira Peak lost it out of bounds under the Arkansas basket.

Peak fouled Stricklen, who missed both of her free throws with 10 seconds left. Kamiko Williams then fouled Harris, who sealed the win for Arkansas (21-6, 10-5 Southeastern Conference) with a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to play.

"I think we all definitely wanted to forget about that first game," Harris said. "We know we played bad that game. We are confident in oru abilities offensively, and I think we were able to stick shots."

Peak then fouled Ariel Massengale to keep the Lady Vols from attempting a 3-pointer to tie the game. Massengale hit both of her foul shots, and Quistelle Williams missed a pair of free throws for Arkansas with 3 seconds left, but Stricklen couldn't get a half-court shot off before the buzzer sounded.

"I have to sink the free throws," Stricklen said. "We had a bad first half, but we came back in the second half. We fought. We just had to step up, and we didn't make the free throws in the end."

The Lady Vols held a 62-60 lead with 48 seconds left in regulation but let C'eira Ricketts run right by them and dish the ball to Sarah Watkins, who hit a layup to tie the game at 62 points with 9 seconds left and force overtime.

Watkins had 18 points, and Ricketts finished with 16 points.

Stricklen led Tennessee (20-8, 11-4) with 17 points, all scored after halftime. Glory Johnson scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

Both teams struggled with hanging on to the ball. Arkansas committed 21 turnovers and Tennessee 19.

The Lady Vols defense had some success frustrating the Lady Razorbacks, who committed four shot-clock violations.

But when Arkansas could get a shot off, it often was a good one. The Lady Razorbacks shot 11 of 19 in the first half and finished 50 percent from the floor.

Watkins drained a 3-point shot and followed with a long jumper to give Arkansas a 21-16 lead with 7:29 in the first half, and the Lady Razorbacks entered halftime with a 31-26 lead ? nearly matching their points total in their 69-38 loss to the Lady Vols on Jan. 8.

Arkansas managed to keep Tennessee off the boards and out of the paint in the first half. The Lady Razorbacks outrebounded the Lady Vols 14-8 and limited them to 9-for-20 shooting before halftime.

Tennessee found some life after halftime from Stricklen and Johnson, who were a combined 0-for-4 with no rebounds in the first half.

"We dug ourselves a hole in the first half," Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick said. "You can't have two of your best players not scoring and not rebounding."

Stricklen sank a pair of 3s to pull Tennessee within two points, and Ariel Massengale stole the ball from Ricketts and hit a layup to tie it at 44 points with 12:08 to go. Johnson came up with key rebounds and found her way to the rim and free-throw line to help the Lady Vols keep a slight edge until just before the end of regulation.

Tennessee had entered the game tied with Kentucky for first place in the SEC, but the Wildcats regained sole control of the conference with a win against South Carolina on Thursday night with one game left to play. The Lady Vols dropped to second place.

Arkansas moved into a tie for third place with Georgia.

In the fight against cancer, every battle and every weapon counts.?

There's a procedure many have never heard of but is being used to treat certain cancers with great success, especially liver cancer.

It's called transarterial chemoembolization and is often referred to as "chemo beads." It is a minimally invasive procedure that injects chemotherapy drugs directly into the blood vessel feeding the tumor.

Doctors mix tiny beads with chemotherapy drugs and inject the mixture into the patient. That allows the drugs to focus directly on the tumor rather than the entire body. Doctors say it is more effective with fewer side effects.

Linda Gabel is an industrial designer at Mosaic Design Studio. She got a big wake-up call one day. She went to the emergency room with intense pain, thinking she was having a heart attack.

"They found a tumor on my liver that had exploded," said Gabel. She quickly learned she had a rare form of cancer called gastrointestional stromal tumor.

Gabel had surgery to remove a large tumor in her liver, but then, months later, another tumor was discovered, and surgery was not the best option.

Doctors chose transarterial chemoembolisation and targeted the tumor in her liver with chemo beads. ????????????????????????????????????

Dr. Brian Schirf, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, performed the procedure in which he mixed tiny beads with aggressive chemotherapy drugs and injected them into the artery that fed Gabel's tumor.

"We tend to get a very high concentration of the beads and chemotherapy in the tumor and not necessarily within the normal liver," said Schirf.

The beads sit in the tumor and leach out, delivering the drug straight to the tumor and over time killing the tumor. It's an aggressive yet minimally invasive approach.
????????????????????????????????????
"We're very happy with the result she has had. The MRI she had in follow-up shows no residual enhancement at all ... The rest of her liver was spared, and the area around the tumor is dead," said Schirf.

The big perk for patients is they receive aggressive cancer treatment with fewer side effects since the treatment is localized, rather than delivered to the entire body.

"It was huge because I didn't have hair loss. I was still tired and had some symptoms, but I'm able to work. I came back within five days, which is terrific," said Gabel.

NBC4's Ellie Merritt joined doctors in surgery to see the procedure firsthand.?

Ellie will share how the procedure is done and where doctors are seeing the greatest success in the treatment of cancer tonight on NBC4 at 5.
