PHL Volcanoes qualify for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens ...

The country?s national rugby team, more popularly known as Philippine Volcanoes, has qualified for the 2013 Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow after defeating South Korea in their fight for third place in the HSBC Asian 7s Series held in Singapore.

The Filipinos first won over Guam, scoring 33-0, then lost to Hong Kong, 29-12. Philippines had upset China, 14-7, in the quarterfinals before beating the Koreans, 22-7, in a do or die match.
According to the Philippines Rugby Football Union?s website, Japan and Hong Kong clinched the first two slots in the world tournament.

The Volcanoes? 3rd-place finish was a significant part of Philippine rugby history.

?Starting 2012 with a debut in the prestigious Hong Kong 7s International Tournament in March, they then went on to win Division 1 of the Asian 5 Nations tournament in April placing themselves among the top 5 elite teams in Asia,? the PRFU posted.

Mentored by coach Al Caravelli, the Philippine rugby team is composed of Harry Morris, Andrew Wolff, Ryan Clarke, Tim Bweheni, Ken Stern, Ben Saunders, Matt Saunders, Joe Matthews, Luke Matthews, Oliver Saunders, Patrice Olivier, and Gareth Holgate.

The 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens will take place in June in Moscow, Russia.
